Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on the incarnation. Check them against the notes below.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: The incarnation is the Christian belief that God became human in the person of Jesus Christ. "Incarnation" means "made flesh" — from the Latin "caro" (flesh).
Exam Tip: Be prepared to explain why the incarnation matters — it enables salvation (Jesus could bridge the gap between God and humanity), reveals God's nature, and shows God understands human suffering.
RS Exam Tips — The Incarnation: 1. For The Incarnation questions, always include specific scriptural or source references where relevant 2. Explain both religious and non-religious viewpoints 3. Use specialist vocabulary precisely (e.g. terms from the specification) 4. Evaluate by analysing strengths and weaknesses of different views before reaching your conclusion 5. Link your discussion of The Incarnation to its real-world impact on believers and society

Lesson 4: Exam Practice: the incarnation
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Command Words
Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).
Main Content (35 minutes)
Exam-Style Question
Attempt a past-paper style question on the incarnation from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.
Exam Tips: Always refer to specific sources of authority (scripture, sacred texts, religious leaders) | Explain contrasting beliefs — different views within and between traditions | Use key terminology precisely (e.g. tawhid, atonement, sanctity of life) | For 12-mark evaluation questions, consider both sides before reaching a justified conclusion | Link beliefs to their impact on individuals, communities and society | Acknowledge diversity — no religious tradition has a single, uniform view
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often confuse the Trinity as three gods rather than one God in three persons. Wrong: "Christians believe in three gods." Correct: "Christians believe in one God who exists as three persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit."
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
Synoptic links: explain how the incarnation connects to another Religious Studies topic you have studied
Real-world: research one real-world use or example of the incarnation
Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in the incarnation?"
Plenary (5 minutes)
Assessment Criteria

📝 Mark Scheme Guidance
How examiners mark the incarnation - GCSE Religious Studies Lessons: Read the command word carefully — State = one word/phrase (1 mark), Describe = pattern or detail (2 marks), Explain = reason with "because" (2–3 marks), Compare = similarities AND differences, Evaluate = both sides + conclusion. Method marks are awarded for correct working even if the final answer is wrong. Always show your working — unexplained answers score zero for AO2.
Success on the incarnation - GCSE Religious Studies Lessons questions: Underline the command word, count the marks (one mark per point expected), and answer in the format the command word demands.
