Privacy vs Security
The Debate: Should governments and organisations be able to collect and monitor personal data to improve security? This creates a conflict between individual privacy and collective security.
Mass surveillance can help prevent terrorism and crime
But it invades personal privacy and can be misused
CCTV, data tracking, and monitoring raise privacy concerns
Where do we draw the line between safety and freedom?
Different countries have different views on acceptable surveillance
Example
The UK has one of the highest numbers of CCTV cameras per capita in the world. Supporters argue it reduces crime and helps solve cases. Critics argue it creates a surveillance state where citizens are constantly watched, eroding the right to privacy.
Automation and Jobs
The Issue: As technology advances, many jobs are being automated (performed by machines or software instead of people). This raises ethical questions about unemployment, retraining, and economic inequality.
Manufacturing robots replace factory workers

Some jobs are created (tech roles) but often require different skills

Example
Self-driving vehicles could eliminate millions of driving jobs (taxi drivers, lorry drivers, delivery drivers). While the technology may be safer and more efficient, the displaced workers face unemployment and need retraining. The ethical question: should we prioritise efficiency or protect people's livelihoods?
Bias in AI and Algorithms
The Issue: AI systems can reflect and amplify human biases. If training data contains biases, the AI will produce biased results, potentially discriminating against certain groups.
AI hiring tools may favour certain demographics over others
Facial recognition has been shown to be less accurate for people of colour
Criminal risk assessment algorithms may be biased against minorities

The data used to train AI often reflects historical societal biases
Example
An AI hiring system trained on historical hiring data from a company that historically hired mostly men may learn to favour male candidates, even if the company now wants to hire more diversely. The AI reproduces the bias in its training data.
⚖️ Legal Impacts
Data Protection Act (2018) / UK GDPR
Purpose: The Data Protection Act (DPA) 2018 and the UK GDPR protect individuals' personal data. They give people rights over their own data and impose obligations on organisations that process it.
Personal data: Any data that can identify a living individual (name, email, photo, IP address)
Data subject: The person whose data is being processed
Data controller: The organisation that decides how and why data is processed
Data processor: The organisation that processes data on behalf of the controller
Key Principles:
Data must be processed lawfully, fairly, and transparently
Data must be collected for a specific, explicit purpose
Data must be adequate, relevant, and not excessive
Data must be accurate and kept up to date
Data must not be kept longer than necessary
Data must be kept secure
Individuals' Rights:
Right to access their personal data

Computer Misuse Act (1990)
Purpose: The Computer Misuse Act makes certain activities involving computers illegal. It was created to address hacking and unauthorised access to computer systems.

Software is protected as a literary work
It is illegal to copy, distribute, or modify copyrighted software without permission
Piracy (illegal copying and distribution) is a criminal offence

Creative Commons
Definition: Creative Commons (CC) is a licensing system that allows creators to share their work legally while specifying how it can be used. It provides standardised licences that sit alongside copyright.
CC0: No rights reserved - anyone can use for any purpose
CC BY: Must give credit to the creator
CC BY-SA: Must give credit and share derivatives under the same licence
CC BY-NC: Must give credit; non-commercial use only
CC BY-ND: Must give credit; no derivatives (no modifications allowed)
Allows legal sharing and reuse without needing to contact the creator
Example
A photographer publishes their photo under CC BY-NC. This means anyone can use the photo for free, as long as they credit the photographer and do not use it commercially. A charity could use it on their website; a company selling products could not.
🌱 Environmental Impacts
E-Waste
Definition: E-waste (electronic waste) is discarded electrical and electronic equipment. It is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally and contains hazardous materials that can pollute the environment.
Millions of tonnes of e-waste are generated each year
If not properly recycled, these toxins leach into soil and water
Much e-waste is shipped to developing countries for "recycling" but is often dumped
Workers (including children) in developing countries dismantle e-waste without protection
Planned obsolescence: devices designed to become outdated quickly, increasing waste
Example
Over 50 million tonnes of e-waste are produced globally each year. Only about 20% is formally recycled. The rest ends up in landfill or is exported to developing countries, where informal recycling causes severe health problems for workers and environmental contamination.
Energy Consumption of Data Centres
The Issue: Data centres - the vast server farms that power cloud computing, streaming, social media, and the internet - consume enormous amounts of electricity for both computing and cooling.
Data centres consume about 1% of global electricity
Streaming video, cloud storage, and AI all require massive computing power
Servers generate heat and need constant cooling (more electricity)
Many data centres use non-renewable energy sources

The Digital Divide
Definition: The digital divide is the gap between those who have access to modern information and communication technology and those who do not. This gap exists both between and within countries.
Global divide: Developed countries have widespread internet and technology; developing countries may lack infrastructure
National divide: Urban areas have better connectivity than rural areas
Socioeconomic divide: Wealthier people can afford devices and broadband; poorer people may not
Age divide: Younger people are typically more digitally literate than older people
Disability divide: People with disabilities may find technology inaccessible
Impact of the Digital Divide
During COVID-19 lockdowns, students without home internet or devices could not access online lessons, falling behind their connected peers. This widened the educational gap between wealthy and disadvantaged students. Similarly, people without internet access cannot use online banking, government services, or job opportunities that are increasingly digital-only.
