1. For NEA Task 1: Food Investigation questions, show every step of your working clearly — method marks count even if the final answer is wrong
2. Check your answer makes sense in context (estimation, units, reasonableness)
3. Use correct mathematical notation and state formulae before substituting values
4. If a NEA Task 1: Food Investigation question asks you to 'prove' or 'show', write a logical chain of reasoning with a conclusion line
5. For problem-solving, identify the topic first, then recall the relevant method

⚠️ Common Errors

✗ Task 1 is a cooking practical with no written work. ✓ Task 1 is primarily a scientific investigation with a written report (1,500–2,000 words). Practical experiments provide evidence, but the report demonstrating understanding of food science is what is assessed.

✗ You don't need to control variables in a food investigation. ✓ Controlling variables is essential. If you change more than one factor between tests, you cannot know which factor caused the observed difference in results. Only the independent variable should change.

✗ The conclusion just describes what happened. ✓ The conclusion must explain results using food science. Don't just say 'the cake with bicarbonate of soda was larger' — explain WHY: 'bicarbonate of soda produced more CO2 because it releases gas when heated AND when combined with acid, creating greater volume through more extensive aeration'.

✗ Task 1 is the same as Task 2. ✓ Task 1 is a food INVESTIGATION (scientific experiment on ingredient properties, 15%). Task 2 is a food PREPARATION task (planning and cooking a menu for a brief, 35%). They assess different skills.

You are investigating how different raising agents affect the volume and texture of a sponge cake. Describe how you would conduct this investigation, including variables and how you would ensure reliable results. (8 marks)

I would investigate how three raising agents — baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and self-raising flour — affect sponge cake volume and texture. The independent variable is the type of raising agent. The dependent variables are cake volume (measured in cm³ by displacement or height) and texture (assessed by sensory evaluation). Controlled variables include: 50g each of flour, sugar, butter, and one egg; oven temperature 180°C; baking time 20 minutes; same mixing method (creaming); same cake tin size and material; same cooling time before measurement. I would make three cakes, changing only the raising agent: Cake A uses baking powder (1 teaspoon), Cake B uses bicarbonate of soda (half teaspoon, with an acidic ingredient like lemon juice), Cake C uses self-raising flour (replacing plain flour). After baking and cooling, I would measure the height and volume of each cake, photograph cross-sections, and conduct a sensory evaluation with at least three testers rating texture, lightness, and overall acceptability on a 1–5 scale.
