✗ Obesity is simply caused by eating too much. ✓ Obesity results from a sustained positive energy balance, but the causes are complex: genetic predisposition, socioeconomic factors, food environment, psychological factors, and physical inactivity all contribute. Simplifying to 'eating too much' ignores the systemic factors.
✗ Only overweight people get type 2 diabetes. ✓ While obesity is the primary risk factor, type 2 diabetes can also occur in normal-weight individuals, particularly those with high visceral fat or genetic predisposition. BMI is not the only indicator of metabolic health.
✗ Tooth decay is only caused by eating sweets. ✓ Any fermentable carbohydrate (including bread, fruit, and dried fruit) can contribute to tooth decay. The frequency of sugar exposure matters more than the total amount — snacking on sugary foods throughout the day is more harmful than consuming the same amount in one sitting.
Evaluate the role of diet in preventing cardiovascular disease. [12 marks]
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the UK's second leading cause of death, and diet plays a significant role in both increasing and reducing risk. The primary dietary risk factor is excessive saturated fat intake, which raises LDL ('bad') cholesterol. LDL cholesterol deposits in artery walls, forming plaques that narrow arteries (atherosclerosis), potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats (olive oil, oily fish) can lower LDL and raise HDL ('good') cholesterol, reducing CVD risk. Excess salt intake (UK average 8.4g/day vs recommended 6g/day) raises blood pressure, another major CVD risk factor. Processed foods contribute approximately 75% of dietary salt. Reducing salt intake by 1.6g/day could prevent approximately 5,000 deaths annually in the UK. Insufficient fruit and vegetable consumption means fewer protective antioxidants and less potassium (which helps lower blood pressure). The UK 5-a-day target is met by only about 30% of adults. Oily fish provides omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation, lower triglycerides, and reduce blood clotting tendency. The recommended two portions per week (including one oily) is rarely met. However, diet alone cannot prevent CVD — physical inactivity, smoking, and genetic factors also contribute significantly. A comprehensive prevention strategy must address all modifiable risk factors. Overall, dietary modification is one of the most effective strategies for reducing CVD risk, but it must be part of a broader lifestyle approach for maximum impact.
