Students also mix up à and en with countries. Wrong: Je vais à France. Correct: Je vais en France (en with feminine countries starting with consonant).

Discussing hobbies requires expressing opinions with reasons: J'adore la lecture parce que ça me détend (I love reading because it relaxes me). Je préfère les jeux vidéo — c'est plus amusant (I prefer video games — it's more fun). For Higher tier, use nuanced opinions: Ce qui me passionne, c'est la photographie (What fascinates me is photography). Je suis passionné(e) par la musique (I am passionate about music).

French teenagers enjoy many of the same hobbies as British teens, but cultural differences exist. La BD (bande dessinée — comic books) is hugely popular in France — it's considered an art form, not just for children. France is the second-largest comic market after Japan. Le Festival d'Angoulême is the world's biggest comic festival.

Exemple

— I am passionate about music — I have been playing the guitar for five years. At the weekend, I also do photography and I like reading French comic books.

La Culture des Loisirs en France

French cultural life is rich and heavily subsidised. Le pass Culture, introduced in 2019, gives every 18-year-old 300€ to spend on cultural activities — cinema tickets, books, concerts, museum entries, music lessons. This pass reflects France's commitment to cultural access for all. Young people can use it to buy des livres (books), go to des concerts, visit des musées, or even buy un instrument de musique.

France has a strong tradition of les associations (clubs and societies). Many towns have la maison des associations — a building housing multiple clubs. Joining an association is a very French way to pursue hobbies.

In Sénégal, hobbies often have a communal focus. Le football de rue (street football) is ubiquitous. Le sabar — traditional drumming and dancing — is both a hobby and a cultural practice. In Belgium, les bandes dessinées are also hugely popular — Belgium is the birthplace of Tintin (Hergé) and Les Schtroumpfs (The Smurfs, by Peyo).

Exemple

— The pass Culture gives 300 euros to 18-year-olds for cultural activities. It's a fantastic initiative to make culture accessible to everyone.

To talk about playing instruments: jouer du piano (to play the piano), jouer de la flûte (to play the flute), jouer de la batterie (to play the drums), jouer du violon (to play the violin). Remember: jouer de + article (du/de la/des) for instruments, but jouer à + article (au/à la/aux) for sports. This distinction is a classic GCSE test point.

Francophone music is incredibly diverse. From Édith Piaf and Johnny Hallyday to modern artists like Aya Nakamura (Mali-French), Stromae (Belgian), and Cœur de Pirate (Québécois), French-language music spans many genres. Le rap français is one of the most popular genres among young people — artists like Nekfeu, Orelsan, and PNL dominate the charts.

I prefer listening to French rap because the lyrics are poetic). Ma chanson préférée est « Formidable » de Stromae (My favourite song is « Formidable » by Stromae). Mentioning specific francophone artists shows cultural knowledge.

Exemple

— I mostly listen to French rap — I love Orelsan and Nekfeu. Stromae, who is Belgian, is also an incredible artist. His song « Alors on danse » is known worldwide.
