Explain how to approach different question types in the GCSE Geology exam and describe effective revision strategies. [6 marks]
For describe questions, state what you observe: features, patterns, data trends. For explain questions, give reasons and mechanisms: why features form, how processes work. For compare questions, state similarities AND differences using comparative language. For evaluate questions, present evidence for and against, then reach a justified conclusion. For calculations, always write the formula, substitute values, show working and include units. For fieldwork questions, use precise geological terminology and specific observations. For extended writing (6-mark), plan first, use structured paragraphs, include named examples and correct vocabulary. Effective revision strategies include: creating summary grids for rock types (composition, texture, origin), practising map interpretation with past papers, drawing annotated field sketches from photographs, making glossary cards for key terms, and timing yourself on past questions. The OCR J357 exam tests three AOs: AO1 (recall, 35%), AO2 (application, 35%) and AO3 (analysis and evaluation, 30%). Target each AO specifically: AO1 needs accurate factual knowledge; AO2 needs applying concepts to unfamiliar contexts; AO3 needs critical analysis of data and evidence.
AO1 (Knowledge & Understanding): Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of geology exam technique, including key geological concepts, observational data and theoretical models relevant to OCR J357.
AO2 (Application of Knowledge): Apply knowledge and understanding of geology exam technique to both familiar and unfamiliar geological contexts, using field evidence and theoretical principles to explain phenomena.
AO3 (Analysis & Evaluation): Analyse geological data related to geology exam technique, evaluate evidence from observations and investigations, and construct reasoned arguments using scientific methodology.
