The rapid diversification of life ~541 million years ago, when organisms evolved hard shells and skeletons for the first time. This made fossilisation much more likely, producing an apparent 'explosion' of life in the fossil record. It marks the start of the Palaeozoic Era.
Vast swamp forests of ferns, horsetails and clubmosses grew in warm, humid conditions. When plants died, they fell into waterlogged swamps where oxygen was absent, preventing decay. Over millions of years, the accumulated plant material was buried, compressed and heated, forming coal seams within sedimentary rock sequences.
Massive volcanic eruptions of the Siberian Traps released enormous volumes of CO2 and other gases, causing extreme global warming, ocean acidification and anoxia. These environmental changes eliminated ~96% of marine species and ~70% of land species, making it the most severe extinction event in Earth's history.

The Devonian ('Age of Fishes') saw the evolution of bony fish and the first amphibians and land plants colonising the continents. The Carboniferous featured vast tropical swamp forests of ferns and horsetails that formed today's coal measures; amphibians thrived and early reptiles appeared. The Permian ended with the greatest mass extinction in Earth's history (~252 Ma), when ~96% of marine species and ~70% of land vertebrates were eliminated.
