π What is Development?
Definition: Development is the process of improvement in a country's economic and social conditions. It involves changes in wealth, health, education, and standard of living.
Development is a complex concept that cannot be measured by a single indicator. Countries are classified as:
LICs (Low-Income Countries) - GNI per head below $1,045 (e.g. Afghanistan, Somalia)
NEEs (Newly Emerging Economies) - Rapidly developing economies (e.g. Brazil, India, Nigeria)
HICs (High-Income Countries) - GNI per head above $12,746 (e.g. UK, USA, Japan)
Example
China is classified as an NEE because its economy has grown rapidly since the 1980s, with an average GDP growth rate of around 9% per year between 2000 and 2019. However, regional disparities mean some areas remain much less developed.
π° Economic Indicators of Development
Gross National Income (GNI) per Head
Definition: GNI per head is the total value of goods and services produced by a country in a year, plus income from abroad, divided by the population. It is measured in US dollars.
GNI per head = (Total GNI + Net income from abroad) Γ· Total population GNI is often adjusted for Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) to reflect the actual buying power of income in different countries.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
GDP measures the total value of goods and services produced within a country's borders in a year. Unlike GNI, it does not include income earned from overseas investments.

Key Link: Social and economic indicators are closely connected. Higher GNI means more money for healthcare and education, which leads to lower infant mortality, higher life expectancy, and better literacy rates.
π The Human Development Index (HDI)
Definition: The HDI is a composite indicator created by the United Nations that combines three measures of development: GNI per head (PPP), life expectancy at birth, and mean years of schooling.
HDI = β (Health index + Education index + Income index) Each component is scored between 0 and 1. The overall HDI is the geometric mean of the three indices.
Values above 0.800 = Very High; 0.700-0.799 = High; 0.550-0.699 = Medium; Below 0.550 = Low

Why HDI is Better Than GNI Alone
Equatorial Guinea has a relatively high GNI per head ($7,480) due to oil exports, but its HDI is only 0.596 (Medium). This is because wealth from oil is concentrated among a small elite, while most people have poor access to healthcare and education. HDI reveals this inequality that GNI per head alone would miss.
π The Demographic Transition Model (DTM)
Definition: The DTM describes how population changes as a country develops economically. It shows the relationship between birth rate, death rate, and total population over five stages.

Why Does Death Rate Fall First?
In Stage 2, death rates fall rapidly because:
Improved medical care (vaccines, antibiotics, hospitals)
Better sanitation and clean water supply
More reliable food supply (agricultural improvements)
Birth rates remain high due to cultural norms, lack of contraception, and high infant mortality
Why Do Birth Rates Fall Later?
In Stage 3, birth rates fall because:
Increased access to contraception and family planning
Women gain better education and career opportunities
Lower infant mortality means fewer children needed
Urbanisation makes large families economically disadvantageous
Government policies (e.g. China's One Child Policy)
Case Study: UK Through the DTM
The UK was in Stage 1 before 1760. The Industrial Revolution brought Stage 2 (1760-1870) as death rates fell from improvements in medicine and sanitation. Stage 3 (1870-1940) saw birth rates decline with urbanisation and education. The UK has been in Stage 4 since 1940 with low birth and death rates. Some argue it is entering Stage 5 as the birth rate has fallen below replacement level (1.63 children per woman in 2022).

Exam Tip: Always evaluate indicators - no single measure gives a complete picture. A country may have high GNI but low life expectancy (e.g. some oil-rich Gulf states with migrant worker populations), or low GNI but good social development (e.g. Sri Lanka, Kerala state in India).

The Brandt Line is an imaginary line that separates the richer "North" from the poorer "South". It was drawn in the 1980s and shows the global inequality in development.
Key Point: The Brandt Line is less relevant today because many countries in the "South" (e.g. China, Brazil, India) have experienced rapid economic growth, while some "Northern" countries have struggled. However, most LICs are still concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia.
Reasons for Uneven Development
Physical factors: Climate (extreme heat or cold limits farming), natural hazards, landlocked position, lack of natural resources

In Stage 3, birth rates begin to fall while death rates remain low. This is due to increased access to contraception, better education (especially for women), urbanisation, and lower infant mortality. The population continues to grow but at a slowing rate.
Death rates fall first because improvements in healthcare, sanitation, and food supply have an immediate impact on mortality. Birth rates remain high initially due to cultural norms, lack of contraception access, and because high infant mortality encourages families to have more children. It takes time for social attitudes and access to family planning to change.
In an LIC you would expect: high birth rate (30-45), high infant mortality (40-80 per 1,000), low life expectancy (50-60 years), low literacy rate (40-70%), and low GNI per head (below $1,045). In a HIC you would expect: low birth rate (8-12), low infant mortality (2-5 per 1,000), high life expectancy (78-84 years), high literacy rate (99%+), and high GNI per head (above $12,746).
