Germany has produced many influential historical figures. In music, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was born in Bonn and composed some of the most famous symphonies in history, including the Ninth Symphony with its Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joy), now the EU anthem. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) was born in Salzburg, Austria, and composed over 600 works before his death at 35. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) from Eisenach is considered the greatest composer of the Baroque period.
In science, Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was born in Ulm and developed the theory of relativity (die Relativitätstheorie). He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. Marie Curie was Polish-French, but many German scientists have won Nobel Prizes — Germany has produced over 100 Nobel laureates. In literature, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) is Germany's most celebrated writer, known for Faust and Die Leiden des jungen Werthers.
In politics, Konrad Adenauer was the first Chancellor of West Germany and led its reconstruction after World War II. Willy Brandt won the Nobel Peace Prize for his Ostpolitik (eastern policy) of reconciliation with Eastern Europe. Angela Merkel was Germany's first female Chancellor (2005–2021) and one of the world's most powerful leaders.

In sport, Manuel Neuer (football, Bayern Munich), Lewis Hamilton (F1 — though British, he drives for Mercedes), and Sebastian Vettel (F1, four-time world champion) are household names. Austrian skiing champions like Marcel Hirscher and Swiss tennis star Roger Federer are also famous in the German-speaking world. For the exam, being able to discuss a famous German-speaking person shows cultural engagement.
German television has become internationally successful. Dark (Netflix) was the first German-language Netflix original series and gained worldwide acclaim. Babylon Berlin is a critically acclaimed crime drama set in the Weimar Republic. These shows have increased global interest in German-language media.

When describing a famous person at GCSE level, use a range of structures. For basic information: Er/Sie wurde in [Stadt] geboren (He/She was born in [city]), Er/Sie ist im Jahr [Jahr] gestorben (He/She died in [year]), Er/Sie ist bekannt für... (He/She is known for...), Sein/Ihr bekanntestes Werk ist... (His/Her best-known work is...).
For opinions: Ich bewundere ihn/sie, weil... (I admire him/her because...), Ich finde ihn/sie interessant, weil... (I find him/her interesting because...), Er/Sie hat die Welt verändert (He/She changed the world). Use relative clauses for Higher tier: Beethoven, der in Bonn geboren wurde, hat die Neunte Sinfonie komponiert (Beethoven, who was born in Bonn, composed the Ninth Symphony).
In the speaking exam, you may be asked to talk about a famous German-speaking person. Prepare a description including: where they are from, what they are famous for, why you admire them, and their cultural significance. Mentioning both historical and contemporary figures shows range. You could also discuss whether celebrities are good role models: Sind Prominente gute Vorbilder?
