At GCSE level, you need extensive travel and holiday vocabulary.
Germans are among the world's most enthusiastic travellers — over 50 million Germans take a holiday abroad each year. Mallorca (Mallorca) is the most popular destination, so much so that some areas are called Ballermann (a reference to the party district).
For the exam, describe past holidays using the perfect tense: Ich bin nach Spanien geflogen (I flew to Spain). We stayed in a hotel on the beach). Use the future tense for plans: Ich werde nächsten Sommer nach Italien fahren (I will go to Italy next summer).
Last summer I flew to Spain with my family. We stayed in a hotel on the beach. The weather was hot and sunny. We swam every day.
Germans' favourite holiday destinations reveal cultural patterns. Spain (especially Mallorca and the Canary Islands) is the top destination, followed by Italy, Austria, Turkey and Greece. Within Germany, the Ostsee (Baltic Sea) coast, the Schwarzwald (Black Forest), and die Alpen (the Alps) are popular. The concept of die Sommerfrische (summer retreat) is an Austrian tradition of escaping the city heat for the countryside.
Austrians prefer domestic holidays — Austria's own Alps, lakes and cities offer everything from skiing to summer swimming. The Wörthersee and Salzkammergut lake districts are popular. In Switzerland, many people enjoy die Bergferien (mountain holidays) within Switzerland, though the Swiss also frequently travel to Italy and France. Switzerland's central location makes international travel very easy.
When discussing holiday destinations in the exam, include cultural details. Aber manche Leute finden, dass es zu viele Touristen gibt (In Germany many people holiday in Mallorca because it is warm there and the beaches are beautiful. But some people think there are too many tourists).
Germans' favourite holiday destinations are Spain, Italy and Austria. Within Germany many go to the Baltic Sea or the Black Forest. I like beach holidays the most.
For top marks, describe holidays in three tenses. Present for habits: Jedes Jahr fahren wir nach Österreich in den Skiurlaub (Every year we go to Austria for a skiing holiday). Last year I went to Italy and ate pizza). Future for plans: Nächstes Jahr werden wir nach Griechenland fliegen (Next year we will fly to Greece).
To add complexity, use the conditional (der Konjunktiv II) for hypothetical holidays: Ich würde gern nach Japan reisen, wenn ich das Geld hätte (I would like to travel to Japan if I had the money). If I were rich, I would travel around the world).
Include opinions and justifications: Ich reise gern, weil man andere Kulturen kennenlernt (I like travelling because you get to know other cultures). I find package holidays too boring because you cannot be spontaneous). The imperfect tense can describe habitual past holidays: Als Kind fuhr ich jeden Sommer an die See (As a child I went to the sea every summer).
Every year I go to Austria with my family. Last summer we went to the Alps and hiked a lot. Next year we will fly to Spain. I would also like to travel to Japan sometime.
