📖 What Was the Renaissance?

Key Context: The Renaissance (meaning "rebirth") was a period of cultural and intellectual change that began in Italy in the 14th century and spread across Europe. It encouraged people to question old ideas, observe the natural world directly, and value human achievement - an approach called humanism.

The Renaissance transformed medicine in several important ways:

🦴 Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564)

Vesalius was a Flemish anatomist who revolutionised the understanding of the human body through careful dissection.

Galen had claimed that the human jawbone was made of two bones (like a dog's), but Vesalius proved it was a single bone. Galen had described the human breastbone as having seven segments; Vesalius showed it had only three. Galen had said the liver had five lobes (as in pigs); Vesalius demonstrated the human liver has no lobes. These corrections proved that Galen's work was based on animal dissection, not human anatomy.

Why Was Vesalius Important?

Limitations of Vesalius: Although Vesalius corrected Galen's anatomical errors, he did not challenge the Theory of the Four Humours. He did not discover any new treatments or cures. His work mainly benefited physicians and surgeons rather than ordinary people. Many doctors still continued to teach Galen's ideas despite the errors.

🔪 Ambroise Paré (1510-1590)

Paré was a French barber-surgeon whose practical discoveries transformed surgical treatment.

Paré wrote: "I was constrained to apply instead a digestive made of egg yolks, oil of roses, and turpentine. That night I could not sleep at my ease, fearing that by lack of cauterisation I would find the wounded dead of poison. I raised myself early to visit them, when beyond my hope I found those upon whom I had applied the digestive medicament feeling little pain, their wounds neither swollen nor inflamed, and having slept through the night. The others whom I had applied the boiling oil were feverish with much pain and swelling about their wounds."

Why was Paré significant? Paré proved that observation and experience were more reliable than following ancient texts. His discoveries were made by chance, but he had the intelligence to recognise what was working. His work directly improved the treatment of surgical patients and saved lives. However, he was a barber-surgeon, not a physician, so the medical establishment initially looked down on his work.
Paré's Methods:

Old method (cauterisation with boiling oil) replaced by new method (soothing paste and ligatures)

❤️ William Harvey (1578-1657)

Harvey was an English physician who discovered the circulation of the blood, overturning Galen's theory of how the body worked.

Galen's Theory (Before Harvey)

Galen believed that blood was produced in the liver from food and then flowed outward through the veins to the body's extremities, where it was consumed. He thought arteries carried a different substance called "pneuma" (vital spirit). According to Galen, blood did not circulate - it was continuously produced and used up.

Harvey's Discovery

Harvey's Evidence:
  • He calculated that the heart pumps more blood in half an hour than the liver could possibly produce from food - so the blood must circulate and be reused
  • He demonstrated that veins have one-way valves that only allow blood to flow towards the heart
  • He proved that the same blood flows through both arteries and veins in a continuous circuit
  • He showed that the heart acts as a pump, pushing blood through the arteries and receiving it back through the veins
Example: Harvey's Experiment with Veins

Harvey showed that if you tied a bandage tightly around an arm, the veins below the bandage would swell with blood, while the arteries continued to pulse normally. This proved that blood flows through veins towards the heart. When he pressed on a vein and then released the pressure, he could see blood refilling the vein from one direction only, proving the existence of one-way valves.

Why Was Harvey's Discovery Important?

Limitations of Harvey: Harvey could not see the capillaries (tiny blood vessels connecting arteries and veins) because they are too small to see without a microscope. Without this missing link, some people doubted his theory. It took over 30 years for his ideas to be widely accepted. Also, like Vesalius, Harvey did not develop any new practical treatments - his work was about understanding, not curing.

Key Dates: Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press around 1440 in Mainz, Germany. By 1500, over 20 million volumes had been printed in Europe. Vesalius' Fabrica (1543) was one of the first major medical texts to be printed with detailed illustrations, ensuring his discoveries spread across Europe.

🔬 The Royal Society

The Royal Society, founded in 1660, became one of the most important forces for promoting scientific knowledge, including medicine.

Key Features

Why the Royal Society mattered for medicine: It provided a forum where scientists could share and discuss new discoveries. It promoted the scientific method - ideas had to be proven by experiment, not just accepted on authority. It published research that could be read across Europe. It encouraged doctors to test new treatments rather than simply following Galen.

In 1666, the Royal Society supervised experiments in which blood was transfused between animals. In 1667, Jean-Baptiste Denys in France (communicating with the Royal Society) performed the first documented human blood transfusion, giving a patient blood from a sheep. While this was extremely dangerous and later banned, it demonstrated the new experimental approach to medicine.

The Great Plague was the last major outbreak of bubonic plague in England, killing an estimated 100,000 people - roughly a quarter of London's population.
