Vietnam's cost to US credibility, SALT and Helsinki, the Afghan invasion, Reagan and SDI, Gorbachev's choices, the fall of the Wall and the USSR's dissolution.
Vietnam (1954–75): domino theory; Gulf of Tonkin (1964) → ~540,000 troops (1969); Tet (1968) turned opinion; withdrawal (1973), Saigon fell (1975). Détente: SALT I (1972), Helsinki (1975); ended by the Afghan invasion (Dec 1979) → SALT II shelved, boycotts (1980/84), Reagan’s build-up (‘evil empire’, SDI 1983). Gorbachev: glasnost, perestroika, INF Treaty (Dec 1987) — first to DELETE a warhead class; unilateral cuts; 1989: Poland June, Wall 9 Nov; 1991: Warsaw Pact dissolved, failed coup, USSR dissolved (25 December).

End-of-Cold-War essays layer causes: long (economy), short (Gorbachev’s choices), immediate (1989 revolutions). Afghanistan = ‘Soviet Vietnam’ — the analogy writes itself.
Routes A and B. Both routes combine a period study, depth studies and a thematic study with non-British elements. Eduqas papers use structured (part-labelled) questions — answer every lettered part, as later parts build on earlier ones.
Always check: specification details change — confirm paper structure and set texts against the current specification for your exam year.
ECONOMY: 1960s–80s growth fell from 5% to stagnation; consumer shortages; the arms burden (~25% of GDP vs US ~6%); oil-price collapse (1986); SDI’s technological threat to an economy that could not answer it.
GORBACHEV’S CHOICES: glasnost legitimised criticism; perestroika destabilised planning; the unilateral cuts and the refusal to crush 1989 — decisions, not inevitabilities; Reagan’s pressure only set the price.
Judgement: the economy made the USSR fragile; Gorbachev’s choices made it fall apart peacefully. Conclude: structure loaded the gun; Gorbachev pulled the trigger on his own empire — the strongest answers refuse a single-cause verdict.
Militarily: the NVA/VC lost ~40,000 men, held no town, the uprising never came — a crushing military defeat. Politically: the offensive reached the US embassy grounds on live television; Johnson’s credibility broke (Cronkite: "mired in stalemate"); LBJ declined re-election (31 March); Westmoreland requested 206,000 more troops and was refused. Exam use: Tet is the perfect evidence for "wars are won on television" — the perception gap between battlefield and broadcast decided the outcome; pair with the Pentagon Papers (1971) for credibility collapse.
