✗ You can discuss themes in general without quoting the Latin text. ✓ Every point about theme or character must be supported by a specific Latin quotation from the set text. General discussion without textual evidence will score very low marks.
✗ Style analysis is about identifying as many devices as possible. ✓ Identifying devices is only step one. You must explain the EFFECT of each device on the reader and how it serves the author's purpose.
✗ In evaluation questions, you should just describe what happens in the passage. ✓ Description (narrating the story) scores minimal marks. Evaluation requires you to analyse how and why the author writes as they do.
✗ The more you write, the higher your mark. ✓ Quality matters more than quantity. A focused answer with 3-4 well-supported PEA paragraphs scores much higher than a long, rambling answer that lacks Latin quotations.
How should you approach an exam question asking 'How does Virgil make this an emotional passage?' Explain the structure and content of an effective answer. (6 marks)
An effective answer uses PEA (Point, Evidence, Analysis) across 3-4 well-chosen features. Briefly state that Virgil creates emotion through multiple poetic techniques. Then make your first point with Latin evidence: 'Virgil uses alliteration of the letter m in lines 2-3 (miserande, miseris, maerent) — the repeated mournful sound creates a weeping effect that immerses the reader in grief.' Continue with further PEA paragraphs: 'The enjambement between lines 5 and 6 carries the sentence over the line break, mirroring how grief flows uncontrolled.' 'Virgil places the key emotional word at the end of the line (line 4: lacrimis), the most emphatic position in hexameter.' 'The simile in line 7 compares the weeping woman to a willow — a tree associated with mourning.' Each paragraph names the technique, quotes the Latin, and explains its emotional effect. Conclude briefly by summarising how the techniques work together.
