Q: Evaluate the impact of streaming on the film industry.
✗ Hollywood films are always American. ✓ Hollywood is dominated by American studios but produces films globally. Many 'Hollywood' films are shot in the UK, Canada, or other countries, and the studios are increasingly international in ownership and content.
✗ Independent films are always better than blockbusters. ✓ Independents offer more creative freedom and diversity, but quality varies. Blockbusters can be well-crafted and culturally significant. The distinction is about production context, not quality.
✗ CGI has made practical effects completely unnecessary. ✓ Many filmmakers still use practical effects alongside CGI, arguing they look more authentic. Films like the recent Mad Max: Fury Road demonstrate the value of practical stunts and effects enhanced by digital technology.
Evaluate the dominance of Hollywood in global film production. [12 marks]
Hollywood dominates global film production through the 'big five' studios, which control production, distribution, and marketing worldwide. This dominance gives Hollywood enormous economic power — blockbusters with budgets over $200m can saturate global markets with marketing campaigns that independent and national cinemas cannot match. Hollywood's dominance has cultural implications. Its products promote American values, lifestyles, and perspectives globally, leading to concerns about cultural imperialism. Local film industries struggle to compete for audiences and screen time, potentially reducing cultural diversity in cinema. However, Hollywood's dominance is not unchallenged. Bollywood produces more films annually than Hollywood, Nollywood (Nigeria) is one of the world's largest film industries, and Korean cinema has achieved global recognition (Parasite winning Best Picture at the Oscars). Streaming platforms have increased access to non-Hollywood content. Hollywood itself is becoming more international — films are made for global rather than just American audiences, featuring diverse casts and international settings. The Marvel franchise is designed to appeal across cultures. Overall, Hollywood remains dominant but faces increasing competition from global cinema and digital platforms that give audiences alternatives to American content.
