The distance the ruler falls before being caught is measured. Convert distance to time using the formula t = โ(2d/g). |
| One Rep Max Test | Strength | Lift the heaviest weight possible for one complete repetition of an exercise (e.g. bench press, squat). The 1RM is the maximum weight that can be lifted once with correct technique. |

If a 15-year-old male scores Level 10.5 on the Multi-Stage Fitness Test, this can be compared to normative data that shows the average for his age group is Level 8.2. This means he is above average for cardiovascular endurance. Without normative data, the score of 10.5 would be meaningless.
A footballer takes the Multi-Stage Fitness Test and scores Level 9. However, the test only measures straight-line running endurance. Football requires repeated sprints, changes of direction and sport-specific movements. The beep test score doesn't fully reflect the footballer's match fitness. A more specific test might involve repeated shuttle sprints with turns.

Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment. You can be fit but unhealthy (e.g. a marathon runner with flu).
Students often think static stretching is the best warm-up. Wrong: Static stretching is the best warm-up Correct: Current evidence suggests dynamic stretching is more effective in warm-ups as it mimics sporting movements. Static stretching may actually reduce power output if held too long before activity.

Progressive overload should be gradual โ the 10% rule suggests not increasing training load by more than 10% per week. Ignoring pain leads to overuse injuries.

GCSE PE tests four AOs: AO1 (Knowledge, 30%) โ recall facts about Fitness Testing including definitions, classifications and specific examples; AO2 (Application, 30%) โ apply knowledge to sporting contexts and training scenarios; AO3 (Analysis and Evaluation, 25%) โ analyse data (graphs, tables), evaluate training methods or strategies, and justify recommendations; AO4 (Practical, 15%) โ demonstrate relevant skills. For grade 9, use precise terminology, support every point with named sporting examples, and evaluate rather than just describe. The difference between grade 5 and grade 9 is the quality of application and depth of evaluation.
