🧬 What are Somatotypes?

Somatotypes: A system of classifying body types based on physical characteristics. There are three main somatotypes: endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph. Most people are a blend of all three, with one type being dominant.

The somatotype system was developed by psychologist William Sheldon in the 1940s. Each somatotype is characterised by specific physical features that make certain body types more suited to particular sports and activities.

The Three Somatotypes:

Most people fall somewhere between these extremes, with one dominant type.

🔴 Endomorph

Endomorph: A somatotype characterised by a high proportion of body fat, a wide waist and hips, and a rounded, soft body shape. Endomorphs tend to store fat easily and find it difficult to lose weight.

A sumo wrestler is a classic endomorph. Their large body mass and low centre of gravity make them incredibly difficult to push out of the ring. The extra weight provides stability and momentum. Similarly, a rugby prop forward uses their bulk to anchor the scrum and provide a powerful pushing force against the opposition pack.

Mesomorph: A somatotype characterised by a muscular, athletic build with broad shoulders, narrow waist and low body fat. Mesomorphs gain muscle easily and have a naturally strong, powerful physique.

Usain Bolt, despite his height, has a mesomorphic build with powerful leg muscles and broad shoulders that generate the explosive force needed for sprinting. A gymnast like Simone Biles shows a compact mesomorphic build with exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, enabling powerful vaults and complex tumbling passes.

Ectomorph: A somatotype characterised by a lean, thin build with low body fat and low muscle mass. Ectomorphs are typically tall and slender with narrow shoulders and a fast metabolism.

Mo Farah is a classic ectomorph - lean and lightweight, ideal for distance running where carrying excess weight would increase the energy cost of every stride. A high jumper like Mutaz Barshim uses their tall, lean build and long legs to clear the bar, where the ectomorphic advantage of long levers and low body weight is critical.

🔄 Most Athletes Are a Blend

Key Principle: Very few people are purely one somatotype. Most individuals - and most athletes - are a blend of all three, with one type being dominant. The blend determines which sports they are best suited to.
Blended Somatotype Examples

Rugby winger: Mesomorph-dominant with some ectomorph (muscular but lean and fast) - needs strength for tackles but speed for running.

Rugby lock forward: Mesomorph-ectomorph blend (tall and muscular) - height for lineouts, strength for scrummaging.

Swimmer (freestyle): Mesomorph with ectomorph traits (broad shoulders, long lean limbs) - power from mesomorph, reach and efficiency from ectomorph.

Footballer (midfielder): Balanced mesomorph-ectomorph (lean and athletic) - needs endurance and speed without carrying excess bulk.

The ectomorph component provides height, long limbs and a lean build - essential for reaching the basket, covering the court quickly and having a stride advantage. The mesomorph component provides muscular power for jumping, sprinting and the physical contact of defending and rebounding. Pure ectomorphs would lack the strength for the physical demands, while pure mesomorphs might not have the height and reach advantages.
  5. Most athletes are not purely one somatotype because different sports require a combination of physical characteristics that no single somatotype provides alone. For example, a rugby winger needs the muscular power of a mesomorph for tackling and acceleration, combined with the lean, lightweight qualities of an ectomorph for sprinting speed. A pure mesomorph would be too heavy for the speed required, while a pure ectomorph would lack the strength for tackles. The mesomorph-ectomorph blend creates the ideal build: strong enough for contact but lean enough for pace.
  6. The dominant somatotype is mesomorph. This body type is advantageous for swimming because: broad shoulders provide a powerful lever for the arm pull through the water, generating greater propulsive force; low body fat means less drag and resistance in the water, allowing faster movement; well-developed musculature (particularly in the upper body and core) produces the sustained power needed for all four swimming strokes; the mesomorph's efficient metabolism supports the high training volumes required for competitive swimming.
