🔧 Technology in Modern Sport
Technology in sport: The use of scientific and digital innovations to improve officiating decisions, enhance performance, advance equipment design, and increase safety. Technology has transformed sport at every level, from grassroots to elite competition.
Technology impacts sport in four main areas:
Officiating and decision-making - Hawk-Eye, VAR, TMO
Performance analysis - data tracking, GPS, video analysis
Equipment advances - improved materials and design
Safety improvements - protective equipment and medical technology

1. Decision-Making Technology

Sporting Examples
Tennis: Hawk-Eye uses multiple cameras to create a 3D trajectory of the ball, allowing players to challenge line calls. Each player gets 3 incorrect challenges per set.
Cricket: The Decision Review System (DRS) uses Hawk-Eye, Hot Spot (infrared thermal imaging) and Snickometer (sound detection) to help the third umpire make accurate decisions.
Football: VAR reviews incidents and recommends corrections to the on-field referee. Goal-line technology (e.g. GoalControl) signals instantly when the ball crosses the line.
