🎯 Exam Tips

📝 Exam Technique

GCSE Spanish Exam Tips:
Use school vocabulary with correct prepositions (en matemáticas, de historia). Express opinions about subjects with reasons. Compare Spanish and British school systems. Use impersonal expressions (se dice que...).

⚠️ Common Errors

✗ Forgetting adjective agreement — writing "ella es inteligent" instead of "ella es inteligente" ✓ All Spanish adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe: inteligente works for both, but many add -a for feminine (alto/alta, bueno/buena).

✗ Using the wrong tense — preterite for descriptions instead of imperfect ✓ Use the imperfect for ongoing past actions, descriptions and habits (era, tenía, hacía). Use the preterite for completed single events (fue, tuvo, hizo).

✗ Confusing ser and estar — both mean "to be" but are used differently ✓ Ser is for permanent characteristics, identity, time (es grande, es español). Estar is for temporary states, location, progress (está cansado, está en Madrid).

✗ Translating directly from English word order — putting adjectives before nouns ✓ Most Spanish adjectives follow the noun: "la casa blanca" (not "la blanca casa"). Some change meaning depending on position (un gran hombre vs un hombre grande).

Notas Detalladas

I study at a state secondary school in Madrid. My favourite subjects are history and science, but I’m not good at maths.

Ejemplo

Cuando era pequeña, mi colegio era muy pequeño — solo tenía cien alumnos. Ahora estudio en un instituto grande.
When I was little, my school was very small — it only had a hundred pupils. Now I study at a large secondary school.

La Vida Escolar: Opiniones y Experiencias

Usa diferentes tiempos verbales.

What I like most about school is seeing my friends. What I like least is doing homework — I spend three hours every night.

Preguntas de Práctica Adicionales

Q: Describe tu colegio y tu horario escolar. Compara con el sistema educativo español.

Model Answer: Estudio en un instituto grande en las afueras de mi ciudad. Hay ochocientos alumnos. Mi horario empieza a las nueve y termina a las tres y media. Estudio diez asignaturas; mis favoritas son ciencias y español. A diferencia de los colegios españoles, no tenemos pausa larga para el almuerzo — solo cuarenta minutos de recreo. Me gustaría tener un horario español con hora de la comida más larga. Lo que menos me gusta es la cantidad de deberes.
I study at a large secondary school on the outskirts. There are 800 pupils. My timetable starts at nine and finishes at half past three. I study ten subjects; my favourites are science and Spanish. Unlike Spanish schools, we don’t have a long lunch break — only forty minutes. I would like a Spanish timetable with a longer lunch hour. What I like least is the amount of homework.

Q: ¿Qué opinas de tu experiencia escolar? ¿Qué cambiarías si pudieras?

Model Answer: Mi experiencia escolar es positiva, aunque cambiaría algunas cosas. Me gusta aprender y ver a mis amigos. Los profesores son buenos. Sin embargo, hay demasiado estrés por los exámenes. Si pudiera cambiar algo, reduciría los exámenes y daría más importancia al trabajo continuo. También añadiría más actividades extracurriculares, como los colegios españoles. Creo que la educación no debe ser solo memorizar, sino desarrollar habilidades prácticas.
My school experience is positive, although I would change some things. I like learning and seeing my friends. The teachers are good. However, there is too much exam stress. If I could change something, I would reduce exams and give more importance to continuous assessment. I would also add more extracurricular activities, like Spanish schools. I think education should not just be about memorising, but developing practical skills.
