🥗 Health, Illness and Wellbeing

Illnesses, symptoms, body parts, healthy lifestyle advice, the healthcare system

Key Fact: This topic covers key vocabulary and structures for health, illness and wellbeing. You need to know the topic vocabulary, be able to use it in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), and express opinions with reasons.

📋 Key Vocabulary and Structures

For Health, Illness and Wellbeing, you must know:

❓ Practice Questions

Q1: Write 4 sentences in Spanish about health, illness and wellbeing.

Q2: Write a paragraph (40-60 words) giving your opinion on health, illness and wellbeing.

Q3: Translate into Spanish: "I think health, illness and wellbeing is important because..."

✅ Answers

  1. Four sentences using topic vocabulary, with correct adjective agreement, articles and verb conjugation. Include at least two different tenses for Higher tier.
  2. A structured paragraph with: introduction (en mi opinión...), opinion with reason (creo que... porque...), a different viewpoint (sin embargo...), and a conclusion (en conclusión...). Use connecting words and varied vocabulary.
  3. "Creo que [topic] es importante porque..." — ensure adjective agreement (masculine/feminine), correct verb form, and give a specific reason.

🎯 Exam Tips

📝 Exam Technique

GCSE Spanish Exam Tips:
Use health vocabulary with tener expressions (tengo dolor de...). Use impersonal expressions for advice (es importante, hay que). Include reflexive verbs for wellbeing (cuidarse, descansar). Reference healthcare in Spanish-speaking countries.

⚠️ Common Errors

✗ Forgetting adjective agreement — writing "ella es inteligent" instead of "ella es inteligente" ✓ All Spanish adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe: inteligente works for both, but many add -a for feminine (alto/alta, bueno/buena).

✗ Using the wrong tense — preterite for descriptions instead of imperfect ✓ Use the imperfect for ongoing past actions, descriptions and habits (era, tenía, hacía). Use the preterite for completed single events (fue, tuvo, hizo).

✗ Confusing ser and estar — both mean "to be" but are used differently ✓ Ser is for permanent characteristics, identity, time (es grande, es español). Estar is for temporary states, location, progress (está cansado, está en Madrid).

✗ Translating directly from English word order — putting adjectives before nouns ✓ Most Spanish adjectives follow the noun: "la casa blanca" (not "la blanca casa"). Some change meaning depending on position (un gran hombre vs un hombre grande).

✍️ Model Answer

Full-Mark Response

Writing task: Write about illnesses, symptoms, body parts, healthy lifestyle advice, the healthcare system.

A grade 9 answer will: use at least three tenses accurately; include complex structures (subordinate clauses, pronouns, negation); show precise grammar (agreement, conjugation, accents); express and justify opinions; include cultural knowledge; use a wide range of vocabulary; be well-organised with connecting words (sin embargo, además, por lo tanto, en conclusión).

Mark scheme: Content (relevance and detail) + Quality of language (accuracy and range) = total marks

Notas Detalladas

El Vocabulario de la Salud y las Enfermedades

Para hablar de la salud: «tener dolor de cabeza» (to have a headache), «tener fiebre» (to have a temperature), «estar resfriado» (to have a cold), «tos» (cough), «la garganta» (throat), «el estómago» (stomach). Usa «me duele(n)» para describir dolor: «Me duele la cabeza», «Me duelen las piernas».

El verbo «doler» funciona como «gustar» — el sujeto es la parte del cuerpo. Decimos «me duele el estómago» (literally: the stomach hurts me), no «yo duelo». Con plural: «me duelen los oídos». Es un error común en GCSE.

Para describir un problema al médico: «No me siento bien», «Tengo náuseas», «He perdido el apetito», «Necesito una cita con el médico». En el role-play, puedes simular una consulta médica.

Ejemplo

No me siento bien hoy. Me duele la cabeza y la garganta, y tengo fiebre. Creo que estoy resfriado. Debería ir al médico.
I don’t feel well today. My head and throat hurt, and I have a temperature. I think I have a cold. I should go to the doctor.

In Spain, the Social Security system offers free medical care. If you need to see a doctor, you can call the health centre for an appointment.

It is important that young people look after their mental health. I recommend that you talk to someone you trust and exercise regularly.
