📝 What is Guidance?

Guidance: The help and direction given to a performer to assist them in learning and developing skills. Coaches use different types of guidance to support performers at different stages of learning and for different types of skill.

The four types of guidance are:

Choosing Guidance: The type of guidance used should match the performer's stage of learning and the nature of the skill. Beginners benefit more from visual and manual/mechanical guidance. Elite performers benefit more from verbal guidance for fine-tuning.

Visual Guidance: Showing the performer how to perform a skill through demonstrations, videos, or diagrams. The performer watches and copies the correct technique.

Beginner: A gymnastics coach demonstrates a cartwheel step by step, allowing the beginner to see the hand placement and body rotation before attempting it.

Verbal Guidance: Explaining how to perform a skill using spoken instructions, coaching points, or cue words. The performer listens and interprets the information.

Beginner: A swimming coach says "reach, pull, push" to remind a beginner of the arm action phases in front crawl. Short, simple cues prevent information overload.

Elite: A golf coach says "smooth takeaway, hinge the wrists earlier" to give a tour player a specific technical adjustment. The elite player already has the basic technique and only needs verbal fine-tuning.

✋ Manual Guidance

Manual Guidance: The coach physically moves, supports or guides the performer's body to help them experience the correct movement. This provides kinaesthetic awareness of the skill.

Beginner: A gymnastics coach supports a beginner during a backflip by holding their hips and guiding the rotation, allowing them to experience the movement safely.

Beginner: A tennis coach stands behind a beginner and guides their arm through the correct forehand swing path, helping them feel the correct technique.

Important: Manual guidance should be gradually reduced (faded) as the performer gains confidence and ability. If the coach continues to provide physical support for too long, the performer becomes dependent and cannot perform the skill independently.

⚙️ Mechanical Guidance

Mechanical Guidance: Using equipment, devices or apparatus to support the performer and help them experience the correct movement. The equipment guides or constrains the movement.

All levels: A bowling machine in cricket delivers consistent balls, allowing batters to focus purely on their shot technique without variation in delivery.

  1. Visual guidance: showing a skill through demonstration, e.g. a coach demonstrating a tennis serve. Verbal guidance: explaining a skill through instructions or cue words, e.g. "keep your eye on the ball" in cricket. Manual guidance: physically moving or supporting the performer, e.g. a coach guiding a beginner's arm through a javelin throw technique. Mechanical guidance: using equipment to support the performer, e.g. a trampolining harness for practising somersaults.
  2. Visual guidance is most effective for beginners because they have no prior experience of the skill and need to see what the correct technique looks like. A demonstration provides a clear mental image of the movement that the beginner can copy. Beginners in the cognitive stage learn best by watching and imitating, as they do not yet have the motor programmes stored in long-term memory to understand verbal instructions alone.
  3. The main disadvantage of manual guidance is that the performer may become over-reliant on the physical support and struggle to perform the skill independently. A coach can address this by gradually reducing (fading) the manual support as the performer gains confidence and ability, eventually removing it completely so the performer can execute the skill unassisted.
  4. This is mechanical guidance. The pull buoy is a piece of equipment that supports the swimmer's legs, keeping them buoyant. It is appropriate for a beginner because it allows them to focus on their arm pull technique without having to coordinate the leg kick simultaneously. It also provides safety by preventing the swimmer from sinking, building confidence in the water.
  5. Verbal guidance is more effective for elite performers because they already have well-established motor programmes and understand the basic technique. They only need small, specific verbal cues to fine-tune their performance (e.g. "hinge wrists earlier"). For a complete beginner, verbal guidance alone is often insufficient because they have no mental picture of the skill and may misunderstand or become overloaded by instructions without a visual reference.
  6. Similarity: Both manual and mechanical guidance provide physical support to help the performer experience the correct movement safely. Differences: (1) Manual guidance involves human physical contact (coach's hands), while mechanical guidance uses equipment/devices. (2) Manual guidance can be adjusted in real-time by the coach, whereas mechanical guidance provides consistent but less adaptable support.
