✗ Saying secondary data is always less accurate than primary data ✓ Secondary data can be very accurate (e.g. government census data); the key issue is whether it is relevant and up to date for your investigation.
✗ Confusing observation and experiment ✓ Observation involves watching without interfering; an experiment involves deliberately changing a variable and measuring the effect.
✗ Thinking a census and a survey are the same ✓ A census collects data from every member of the population; a survey usually collects data from a sample.
✗ Claiming primary data is always better ✓ Primary data has advantages but may have a small sample or bias; secondary data can provide larger, more representative data sets quickly and cheaply.
A student wants to compare the average rainfall in London and Manchester over the last 10 years. Should they use primary or secondary data? Justify your answer.
The student should use secondary data. Rainfall data for the last 10 years already exists and is freely available from the Met Office or other meteorological sources. Advantages: It is quick and free to access; the data has been collected professionally using standardised instruments over a long period, making it reliable. Collecting primary data would be impractical because the student would need rain gauges in both cities running for 10 years, which is far beyond the time and cost available for a school investigation. The student should check that the secondary data comes from a reputable source and that the recording methods are consistent between the two cities.
