A student wants to compare the average rainfall in London and Manchester over the last 10 years. Should they use primary or secondary data? Justify your answer.
The student should use secondary data. Rainfall data for the last 10 years already exists and is freely available from the Met Office or other meteorological sources.
Advantages: It is quick and free to access; the data has been collected professionally using standardised instruments over a long period, making it reliable.
Collecting primary data would be impractical because the student would need rain gauges in both cities running for 10 years, which is far beyond the time and cost available for a school investigation.
The student should check that the secondary data comes from a reputable source and that the recording methods are consistent between the two cities.
