The difference of ยฃ2k appears very large visually because the axis is truncated, exaggerating the relative change from 101 to 103.
Doubling both dimensions quadruples the area, making 2000 appear four times larger than 1000 rather than twice as large.
The years are not equally spaced (the last gap is 10 years, not 5), so equal spacing on the x-axis gives a misleading impression of the rate of change.
3D perspective makes sectors at the front appear larger than those at the back, even when they represent the same value.
Start the y-axis at zero to show the true proportional difference, or clearly indicate the break in the axis with a zigzag symbol.

In exam questions about misleading graphs, always state what the graph shows, what is misleading, and how it should be corrected.
When asked to identify problems with a graph, check: axis start point, scale consistency, labelling, 3D effects, and proportional representation.
If a question shows a misleading pictogram, explain that symbols should only increase in one dimension (height), or that a key should make the actual values clear.
Be specific when describing misrepresentation โ say 'the y-axis is truncated at 50, which exaggerates the difference between the two bars' rather than just 'the axis is misleading'.
Remember that the purpose of identifying misrepresentation is to ensure data is presented fairly and objectively; always suggest how the graph could be redrawn correctly.

2. Check your answer makes sense in context (estimation, units, reasonableness)
3. Use correct mathematical notation and state formulae before substituting values
4. If a Graphical Misrepresentation question asks you to 'prove' or 'show', write a logical chain of reasoning with a conclusion line
5. For problem-solving, identify the topic first, then recall the relevant method

โ Confusing a legitimate scale choice with an inconsistent scaleโ A consistent scale has uniform intervals throughout; choosing a different range from zero is not inconsistent, but changing interval sizes partway along the axis is.
โ Only identifying one problem when a graph has multiple misleading featuresโ Always check all features: axes, scales, labels, visual effects, and proportions โ a single graph may have several misleading elements.

A company presents a bar chart comparing this year's sales (ยฃ210k) with last year's sales (ยฃ200k). The y-axis starts at ยฃ190k. Explain why this graph is misleading and how it should be improved.
The y-axis is truncated at ยฃ190k, which means the bar for ยฃ210k appears roughly twice as tall as the bar for ยฃ200k, exaggerating the difference. In reality, the increase is only (ยฃ210k โ ยฃ200k) รท ยฃ200k ร 100 = 5%, but the visual impression suggests a much larger increase.
To improve the graph, the y-axis should start at ยฃ0 so that the bars show the true proportional difference. Alternatively, if a truncated axis is used for clarity, a break symbol (zigzag) should be drawn on the y-axis and the actual values should be labelled on each bar so the reader can see the true difference.
