A-Level prose revision: The Great Gatsby, Frankenstein, The Handmaid's Tale and Atonement - narrative voice, symbolism, structure, context, AO5 critical readings and essay technique for AQA A/B, Edexcel and OCR.
🎯 Learning Objectives
Analyse narrative voice and focalisation: Nick's retrospective ambivalence, Frankenstein's framed narrators, Offred's present-tense fragmentation, Briony's metafictional control (AO2).
Track symbol patterns (green light, light and fire, colour coding, the Tallis vase) and structural devices across whole texts (AO2).
Situate novels in context - Jazz Age American Dream, Romanticism and galvanism, 1980s New Right, WW2 and postmodernism - woven into analysis (AO3).
Deploy critical readings (Trilling, Moers, Atwood) as interpretations to weigh, not quotations to drop (AO5).
Structure 25-mark essays with thesis, method-first paragraphs and evaluative or comparative judgement (AO1/AO4).
📋 Key Definitions and Core Concepts
Frame narrative: A story inside a story: Walton's letters enclose Victor's account, which encloses the Creature's - each mediation shifts sympathy and reliability.
Free indirect discourse: Third-person narration sliding into a character's idiom without quotation marks; McEwan uses it to make readers inhabit Briony's, Emily's and Robbie's minds.
Unreliable narrator: A narrator whose account the reader must question; Nick's claimed honesty and Briony's confession both make reliability the object of analysis.
Metafiction: Fiction that draws attention to its own making; Atonement's coda reveals the text as Briony's authored construct.
Symbol: An object carrying meaning beyond itself: Gatsby's green light compresses longing, distance and the American Dream into one image.
Speculative fiction: Atwood's term for The Handmaid's Tale: built from documented historical possibilities, not invented science - a useful AO3/AO5 distinction.
Pathetic fallacy: Weather or landscape given emotional force; Fitzgerald's heat wave at the Plaza registers moral pressure before the confrontation.
📌 Key Points
Boards: Gatsby (AQA B tragedy prose; AQA A Paper 1), Atonement (AQA A prose; AQA B crime), Frankenstein + The Handmaid's Tale (Edexcel 9ET0 Paper 2 'Science and society', one text pre-1900), The Handmaid's Tale also on AQA A Modern times and AQA B protest.
Edexcel Paper 2 is comparative: two prose texts, one pre-1900, integrated comparison throughout.
AQA essays are 25 marks: AO1 28%, AO2 24%, AO3 24%, AO4 12%, AO5 12% across the A-level.
Narrative voice and focalisation
Examiners reward analysis of how a story is told before what it tells. In The Great Gatsby, Nick's retrospective first person claims honesty ('I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known') while quietly exposing his bias - sympathy for Gatsby's 'extraordinary gift for hope', contempt for Tom and Daisy. Retrospection lets him select, frame and moralise; treat every judgement as crafted, not given.
Frankenstein is a triple frame: Walton's letters enclose Victor's narrative, which encloses the Creature's. Each frame relays the story through an interested voice, so sympathy must be earned rather than assumed - Victor speaks in sublime Romantic rhetoric, the Creature in vernacular pathos, and Walton's ambition mirrors Victor's, closing the frame with an unresolved question of over-reaching.
The Handmaid's Tale gives Offred a first-person present tense broken into 'night' fragments: memory interrupts survival. Puns and the palimpsest ('Nolite te bastardes carborundorum') become acts of resistance; the Historical Notes epilogue reframes her narration as an archive - and the Professor's careless misattribution of her words is Atwood's final irony about who controls testimony.
Atonement multiplies focalisation across Part 1 (Emily, Cecilia, Briony, Robbie each narrate the same afternoon), then detonates its reliability: the coda reveals the reunion and trial outcome as Briony's invention. Free indirect discourse becomes a moral instrument - the reader is made to misjudge Robbie exactly as Briony did, so narrative technique and guilt are the same question.
Symbolism and structure
Build symbol paragraphs as arguments, not lists. Gatsby: the green light ('orgastic future') fuses desire, distance and national myth; the valley of ashes and the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg stage capitalism's waste and a vacancy where judgement should be; East Egg against West Egg maps class as geography. Fitzgerald's seasonal chronology - parties swelling through a New York summer to the death in autumn - makes structure itself the moral arc.
Frankenstein: light and fire carry Promethean knowledge ('the dazzling light vanished' at the Creature's birth; fire teaches warmth and burns); the sublime Alps and the domestic interior divide public ambition from private cost; Walton's polar circle makes the structure an argument about obsession that never resolves.
The Handmaid's Tale: Gilead codes bodies by colour (blue Wives, red Handmaids); flowers and eyes motif surveillance and enforced fertility; the fragmented chaptering enacts Offred's broken memory, so form performs trauma.
Atonement: the Meissen vase, twice broken, tracks class fragility; the fountain scene retold across perspectives makes perception itself the object; the three-part structure plus 1999 coda turns reading into an ethical test.
Text
Ending as judgement
Gatsby
'So we beat on' - critique becomes national epitaph
Frankenstein
Walton turns back - ambition repudiated, ambiguity kept
The Handmaid's Tale
Historical Notes - suffering archived, meaning dimmed
Atonement
Coda - invention confessed, forgiveness withheld
Context, AO5 and essay technique
Context must be woven, one sentence per paragraph maximum, always through the method it explains. Gatsby: Jazz Age prosperity, prohibition and the myth of self-invention - Fitzgerald's critique is of a Dream that promises mobility and delivers carelessness ('They were careless people, Tom and Daisy'). Frankenstein: galvanism debates and Enlightenment science; Mary Shelley, Wollstonecraft's daughter, revises Milton; note the 1818 and 1831 editions as different texts - a ready-made AO5 point. The Handmaid's Tale: 1980s American New Right, second-wave feminism and Puritan New England; Atwood insists 'nothing in it didn't happen somewhere'. Atonement: 1935 class hierarchy, the 1940 retreat, and postmodern self-consciousness about the novel's own power.
AO5 readings to weigh: Trilling - Gatsby, divided between power and dream, stands for America itself; Moers reads Frankenstein as female Gothic, a birth myth of parental abandonment; Atwood's 'speculative fiction' label resists genre dismissal; on Atonement, debate rages over whether the coda redeems or cheats - take a side with textual evidence.
Essay technique (25 marks): thesis in the first two sentences; four paragraphs, each a method with effects, not a topic; context attached to evidence; AO5 either woven as 'a reading that...' or given a dedicated evaluative paragraph; conclusion judges, never summarises. For Edexcel Paper 2, both texts must appear in every paragraph - integrate, and alternate evidence so neither text dominates. Open book means short embedded quotations: precision over volume.

💡 Worked Example
Exam-style: AQA B (7717) Paper 1 Section C style (25 marks): 'Gatsby is destroyed by his own idealism rather than by the carelessness of others.' In the light of this view, consider how Fitzgerald presents Gatsby's tragedy.
Mark-scheme logic: Mark-scheme logic: AO1 coherent thesis with judgement; AO2 methods (narrative voice, symbol, structure) with effects; AO3 Jazz Age context woven; AO5 alternative readings weighed. Thesis (AO1): idealism and carelessness are complicit - Gatsby's 'extraordinary gift for hope' is genuine, but it is spent on a world built by careless wealth, so Fitzgerald makes the Dream itself tragic. Paragraphs (AO2): the green light as idealism made visible; Nick's elegiac narration as the vehicle of tragedy; Daisy's voice 'full of money' as the object idealism mistakes for love; the valley of ashes and Myrtle's death as carelessness. AO3: prohibition-era aspiration and inherited class barriers. AO5: weigh idealism as ennobling ('worth the whole rotten bunch') against enabling; conclude that Fitzgerald refuses to separate the two - the tragedy is the fit between them.
❓ Practice Questions & Mark Schemes
'The Creature is more sinned against than sinning.' Discuss (Edexcel 9ET0 style, Frankenstein).
Answer: Thesis: the Creature's crimes are caused, not excused - Shelley structures sympathy to prove nurture, not nature. For: De Lacey rejection, 'I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend'; vernacular pathos after Victor's rhetoric. Against: William's murder, framing Justine, the honeymoon - agency the novel refuses to erase. AO2: frame structure makes every accusation relayed; Miltonic allusion ('I ought to be thy Adam') casts judgement as failed parenting. AO3: galvanism-era anxieties, Romantic nature vs Enlightenment reason. AO5: weigh determinist reading against moral-agency reading; conclude Shelley holds both - guilt is inherited and chosen, which is the novel's tragedy.
'Offred's narrative is an act of resistance, not merely of survival.' How far do you agree? (25 marks)
Answer: Thesis: narration itself is Offred's only weapon - Gilead controls bodies, but not the story being kept. For: punning ('Larynx... Valuable'), the palimpsest 'Nolite te bastardes carborundorum', deliberate reconstruction ('I would like to believe this is a story I'm telling'), address to a future reader ('you'). Against: narration also betrays compliance - she narrates rather than acts; Ofglen's resistance exposes her passivity. AO2: present tense and night fragments show memory as survival strategy; Historical Notes prove the act succeeded - the tale outlives the regime, though distorted. AO3: 1980s authoritarianism and testimony culture. AO5: weigh resistance against complicity; conclude Atwood makes storytelling resistance of a limited, posthumous kind.
'Briony's coda redeems neither the novel nor herself.' Evaluate this view of Atonement.
Answer: Thesis: the coda confesses invention but confers no absolution - atonement is promised, never achieved. For: Briony admits 'how can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also God?' - the lovers live only in ink; the moral debt to Robbie ('the attempt was all') is explicitly unpaid. Against: some argue disclosure is itself the only available atonement - truth after sixty years has documentary value. AO2: metafictional control, tense shift to 1999, the vase and fountain recycled as guilt-tokens. AO3: postmodern scepticism about narrative truth; WW2 context of the real events suppressed. AO5: weigh redemption against fraud; conclude McEwan designs the ending to indict authorial power, so the coda cannot redeem - and the accusation is the point.
'Nick's narration betrays more than it reveals.' Discuss narrative voice in The Great Gatsby.
Answer: Thesis: Nick's retrospective first person is a performance of honesty that exposes class sympathy and complicity. AO2: claimed honesty ('I am one of the few honest people') undercut by his role in the final arrangements; selective sympathy ('extraordinary gift for hope') against contempt ('careless people'); retrospective framing lets him assign meaning ('within and without, simultaneously'). Evidence of betrayal: he romanticises Gatsby, absolves himself of bystander guilt, and controls Daisy's portrait. AO3: Midwestern values narrating Eastern decadence. AO5: weigh Nick as unreliable moraliser vs necessary witness - without his elegy, Gatsby has none. Judgement: the narration's bias is the novel's critique; Fitzgerald lets the teller condemn himself.
