The design process follows a structured sequence: brief analysis, research, specification, ideation, development, modelling, testing, and final outcome. Each stage builds on the previous one. Professional designers iterate between stages rather than following a rigid linear path. The double diamond model (Discover, Define, Develop, Deliver) is widely used in UK design studios.

A design brief outlines the problem to solve, the target user, and key constraints (budget, materials, time). Effective ideation uses techniques like mind mapping (radiant thinking from a central concept), SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to other use, Eliminate, Reverse), morphological analysis (combining design features in a grid), and thumbnail sketching. Quantity of ideas matters more than quality at the initial stage — avoid self-censoring.
When designing a sustainable packaging solution, a student might use SCAMPER: Substitute plastic with biodegradable film, Combine the box with a carrying handle, Adapt Japanese origami folds to create structure without glue, Eliminate the plastic window entirely.
