Functions of Packaging

Packaging serves four key functions: Protection (keeping the product safe during transport and storage), Containment (holding the product securely), Information (displaying legal requirements, ingredients, barcodes, and instructions), and Promotion (attracting customers at point of sale). Good packaging balances all four — a beautiful box that fails to protect the product is useless, and strong protection that hides the brand wastes a marketing opportunity.

Example

Toblerone's triangular packaging is iconic and functional: the shape protects the chocolate segments, the distinctive form stands out on shelves (promotion), the box contains the product neatly, and the packaging displays brand information and ingredients. The shape is so distinctive it has been trademarked.

Print Processes and Finishes

Lithography (litho) prints high-quality, consistent colour in large quantities — ideal for magazines and packaging. Digital printing is cost-effective for short runs and personalisation. Screen printing suits thick inks on textiles and posters. Foil blocking applies metallic foil using heat and pressure for premium finishes. Embossing/debossing creates raised or recessed designs. Spot UV varnish highlights specific areas with gloss against a matt background. Each finish adds cost but increases perceived value.

Example

A luxury chocolate box might use litho printing for the main design, foil blocking for the brand name in gold, embossing for a raised logo, and spot UV on the product image to make it shine against the matt background. These finishes together create a premium feel that justifies a higher price point.

Sustainable Packaging Design

Sustainable packaging minimises environmental impact through: using recycled or recyclable materials (card, paper, glass, aluminium), reducing material quantity (lightweighting), eliminating unnecessary layers (minimal packaging), using vegetable-based inks instead of petroleum-based, and designing for disassembly (easy separation of material types for recycling). The UK Packaging Regulations require businesses to meet recycling targets.

Example

Lush Cosmetics uses "naked" packaging (solid shampoo bars with no packaging at all), recycled black pots for creams, and paper bags made from recycled paper. When packaging is necessary, they use biodegradable materials like popcorn instead of polystyrene packing peanuts for shipping.

If a designer focuses only on promotion (attractive graphics) but ignores protection, the product may arrive damaged, leading to returns and lost trust. If protection is prioritised without promotion, the product may not attract buyers on the shelf. Information must meet legal requirements (ingredients, weight, barcode, recycling symbols) — missing these can result in the product being refused by retailers. Containment ensures the product does not leak, spill or fall out. For example, a perfume bottle needs an attractive box (promotion), secure internal moulding (protection and containment), and regulatory text including volume, ingredients, and recycling symbols (information). Neglecting any function results in a failed product launch.
  2. Glass is infinitely recyclable without quality loss, inert (no chemical leaching), and perceived as premium — supporting higher pricing. Even "recyclable" PET is only recycled around 20-30% of the time in the UK. A balanced solution might use recycled glass for premium products (where weight is less critical and price premium covers costs) and recycled PET with clear recycling instructions for mass-market drinks, while investing in closed-loop systems that ensure bottles are actually collected and reprocessed.
