✗ Organic food is always more nutritious than non-organic food. ✓ The nutritional difference between organic and non-organic food is small and inconsistent. The main benefits of organic farming are environmental (no pesticides, better soil health, higher biodiversity) and animal welfare.
✗ Food miles are the biggest contributor to food's carbon footprint. ✓ Transport typically accounts for a small proportion of food's carbon footprint. Production (especially of meat and dairy) is usually the largest contributor.
✗ Free-range means animals live completely natural lives outdoors. ✓ Free-range standards set minimum access to outdoor areas, but the amount of space, time outdoors, and conditions vary. Some free-range systems still involve relatively intensive indoor housing with limited outdoor access.

Intensive farming uses artificial fertilisers, pesticides, antibiotics, and high-density animal housing to maximise food production at low cost. It yields large quantities of affordable food, which helps feed growing populations and keeps consumer prices down. However, it is less sustainable: artificial fertilisers and pesticides degrade soil health and pollute waterways, high-density housing raises serious animal welfare concerns, and antibiotic overuse contributes to antimicrobial resistance. Organic farming avoids artificial chemicals, uses crop rotation and natural fertilisers (compost, manure), and provides higher animal welfare with outdoor access. It supports biodiversity, improves soil structure, and avoids pesticide residues. However, organic yields are significantly lower (typically 20–40% less), requiring more land to produce the same amount of food, which can drive deforestation. Organic food is also more expensive, limiting access for lower-income consumers. In terms of sustainability, organic farming is better for local ecosystems and animal welfare, but its lower yields mean a larger land footprint per unit of food. Intensive farming is more land-efficient and affordable but damages the environment long-term. The most sustainable approach may combine elements of both: precision farming to reduce chemical use, integrated pest management, and improving intensive welfare standards while making organic more accessible through policy and innovation.
