Leisure activities, reading, music, films; hobbies in different tenses; opinions and reasons
For Hobbies and Interests, you must know:
Q1: Write 4 sentences in French about hobbies and interests.
Q2: Write a paragraph (40-60 words) giving your opinion on hobbies and interests.
Q3: Translate into French: "I think hobbies and interests is important because..."
Students often forget to use the perfect tense for completed past activities. Wrong: Hier, je joue au foot. Correct: Hier, j'ai joué au foot (perfect tense for completed past actions). Students also mix up à and en with countries. Wrong: Je vais à France. Correct: Je vais en France (en with feminine countries starting with consonant).
Writing task: Write about leisure activities, reading, music, films; hobbies in different tenses; opinions and reasons.
A grade 9 answer will: use at least three tenses accurately; include complex structures (subordinate clauses, pronouns, negation); show precise grammar (agreement, conjugation, spelling); express and justify opinions; include cultural knowledge; use a wide range of vocabulary; be well-organised with connecting words (cependant, en revanche, de plus, en conclusion).
Mark scheme: Content (relevance and detail) + Quality of language (accuracy and range) = total marks
AO1 — Knowledge: Show understanding of Hobbies and Interests by demonstrating accurate vocabulary and grammatical structures in the target language.
AO2 — Application: Apply your knowledge of Hobbies and Interests to understand and produce language in listening, reading, speaking and writing contexts.

Hobbies vocabulary: la lecture (reading), la musique (music), le dessin (drawing), la peinture (painting), la cuisine (cooking), le jardinage (gardening), la photographie (photography), les jeux vidéo (video games), la danse (dance), le théâtre (theatre/drama). Use faire de for activities: je fais de la danse, je fais du théâtre. Use jouer de for instruments: je joue du piano, je joue de la guitare — note this is jouer de, not jouer à.
Discussing hobbies requires expressing opinions with reasons: J'adore la lecture parce que ça me détend (I love reading because it relaxes me). Je préfère les jeux vidéo — c'est plus amusant (I prefer video games — it's more fun). For Higher tier, use nuanced opinions: Ce qui me passionne, c'est la photographie (What fascinates me is photography). Je suis passionné(e) par la musique (I am passionate about music).
French teenagers enjoy many of the same hobbies as British teens, but cultural differences exist. La BD (bande dessinée — comic books) is hugely popular in France — it's considered an art form, not just for children. France is the second-largest comic market after Japan. Le Festival d'Angoulême is the world's biggest comic festival.
Je suis passionné par la musique — je joue de la guitare depuis cinq ans. Le week-end, je fais aussi de la photographie et j'aime lire des bandes dessinées françaises. — I am passionate about music — I have been playing the guitar for five years. At the weekend, I also do photography and I like reading French comic books.
French cultural life is rich and heavily subsidised. Le pass Culture, introduced in 2019, gives every 18-year-old 300€ to spend on cultural activities — cinema tickets, books, concerts, museum entries, music lessons. This pass reflects France's commitment to cultural access for all. Young people can use it to buy des livres (books), go to des concerts, visit des musées, or even buy un instrument de musique.
France has a strong tradition of les associations (clubs and societies). Many towns have la maison des associations — a building housing multiple clubs. Common activities include le club de lecture (book club), la chorale (choir), le club de jeux de société (board game club), l'atelier de peinture (painting workshop). Joining an association is a very French way to pursue hobbies.
In Sénégal, hobbies often have a communal focus. Le football de rue (street football) is ubiquitous. Le sabar — traditional drumming and dancing — is both a hobby and a cultural practice. In Belgium, les bandes dessinées are also hugely popular — Belgium is the birthplace of Tintin (Hergé) and Les Schtroumpfs (The Smurfs, by Peyo).
Le pass Culture donne 300 euros aux jeunes de 18 ans pour des activités culturelles. C'est une initiative fantastique pour rendre la culture accessible à tous. — The pass Culture gives 300 euros to 18-year-olds for cultural activities. It's a fantastic initiative to make culture accessible to everyone.
To talk about playing instruments: jouer du piano (to play the piano), jouer de la flûte (to play the flute), jouer de la batterie (to play the drums), jouer du violon (to play the violin). Remember: jouer de + article (du/de la/des) for instruments, but jouer à + article (au/à la/aux) for sports. This distinction is a classic GCSE test point.
Francophone music is incredibly diverse. From Édith Piaf and Johnny Hallyday to modern artists like Aya Nakamura (Mali-French), Stromae (Belgian), and Cœur de Pirate (Québécois), French-language music spans many genres. Le rap français is one of the most popular genres among young people — artists like Nekfeu, Orelsan, and PNL dominate the charts.
Discussing music preferences: Je préfère écouter du rap français parce que les paroles sont poétiques (I prefer listening to French rap because the lyrics are poetic). Ma chanson préférée est « Formidable » de Stromae (My favourite song is « Formidable » by Stromae). Mentioning specific francophone artists shows cultural knowledge.
J'écoute surtout du rap français — j'adore Orelsan et Nekfeu. Stromae, qui est belge, est aussi un artiste incroyable. Sa chanson « Alors on danse » est connue dans le monde entier. — I mostly listen to French rap — I love Orelsan and Nekfeu. Stromae, who is Belgian, is also an incredible artist.
