French teenagers socialise differently from British ones. In France, le ciné is very popular — France has the highest number of cinemas per capita in the world and le cinéma français is celebrated globally. La Fête du Cinéma, held annually, offers 4€ tickets to all films. Going to a café with friends is also a typical social activity — French cafés are social institutions where people sit for hours talking.

Discuss past outings using the perfect tense: Samedi dernier, je suis allé(e) au ciné avec mes amis — on a vu un film français (Last Saturday, I went to the cinema with my friends — we saw a French film). Use the imperfect for descriptions: Il y avait beaucoup de monde (There were a lot of people). Combine both: Je regardais le film quand mon téléphone a sonné (I was watching the film when my phone rang).

Exemple

Samedi dernier, je suis sorti(e) avec mes amis. D'abord, on est allés au ciné voir un film d'auteur français, puis on a pris un café en terrasse. — Last Saturday, I went out with my friends. First, we went to the cinema to see a French arthouse film, then we had a coffee on the terrace.

La Culture du Cinéma Français

Cinema is central to French culture. France invented cinema — les frères Lumière held the first public screening in 1895 in Paris. The Festival de Cannes is the world's most prestigious film festival, awarding la Palme d'Or each year. France also has le César — the French equivalent of the Oscars. French cinema is known for le film d'auteur (arthouse cinema), but also produces popular comedies and thrillers.

The French government actively supports cinema. L'avance sur recettes is a system where the state provides funding for films before they're made. Le CNC (Centre National du Cinéma) ensures French films aren't overwhelmed by Hollywood — there's even an exception culturelle (cultural exception) rule in trade agreements protecting French cultural products. This means French cinemas must show a minimum percentage of French-language films.

In Belgium, the Festival international du film fantastique in Gérardmer is an important event. In Québec, le cinéma québécois has a distinctive voice — films like « Mommy » by Xavier Dolan have won international acclaim. In Sénégal, Ousmane Sembène is considered the father of African cinema — his film « La Noire de... » (1966) was the first feature film by a sub-Saharan African director.

Exemple

Le Festival de Cannes est le festival de cinéma le plus prestigieux du monde. La Palme d'Or est le prix le plus convoité. Le cinéma français est protégé par l'exception culturelle. — The Cannes Festival is the most prestigious film festival in the world. The Palme d'Or is the most coveted prize. French cinema is protected by the cultural exception.

Les Divertissements dans la Francophonie

Entertainment culture varies across the francophone world. In France, les fêtes foraines (funfairs) are popular, especially around le 14 juillet and la Toussaint. La Fête de la Musique (21 June) is a nationwide festival with free concerts in every town. Le Festival d'Avignon is the world's largest theatre festival.

In Belgium, le Festival de Dour is one of Europe's biggest music festivals. Les fêtes de Wallonie celebrate Belgian culture with street performances and local food. In Québec, le Festival d'été de Québec is a massive 11-day music event. Le Carnaval de Québec in winter is the world's largest winter carnival, featuring le palais de glace (ice palace) and le canot à glace (ice canoe racing).

For Higher tier, describe entertainment experiences using a range of structures: La fête était incroyable — il y avait des concerts, des animations et une ambiance fantastique. Use the imperfect to set the scene and the perfect for specific events: Il y avait des gens partout, quand soudain, le feu d'artifice a commencé (There were people everywhere, when suddenly, the fireworks began).

Exemple

Le Festival d'été de Québec dure onze jours et attire des milliers de spectateurs. Le Carnaval de Québec, en hiver, est le plus grand carnaval d'hiver au monde avec son palais de glace. — The Québec Summer Festival lasts eleven days and attracts thousands of spectators. The Québec Carnival, in winter, is the largest winter carnival in the world with its ice palace.
