To discuss future plans at GCSE level, use the future tense with werden + infinitive. Ich werde nächstes Jahr mein Abitur machen (I will do my Abitur next year). Ich werde an der Universität studieren (I will study at university). The verb werden is conjugated: ich werde, du wirst, er/sie wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden. The infinitive always goes to the end of the clause.
You can also express future plans using the present tense + time phrase: Nächstes Jahr mache ich ein Praktikum (Next year I am doing an internship). This is simpler and equally correct when a time phrase makes the future meaning clear. For Higher tier, combine both methods for variety: Nächstes Jahr werde ich ein Praktikum machen (Next year I will do an internship).
The German education system offers multiple pathways after school. Students can do: das Abitur (university entrance qualification), eine Ausbildung (vocational training/apprenticeship), ein Praktikum (internship), ein Gap Year (das Überbrückungsjahr), or ein Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ — a voluntary social year, similar to a gap year but in social work). The Duales System (dual system) of vocational training, combining work and study, is uniquely German and highly regarded worldwide.
Nach dem Abitur werde ich ein Jahr im Ausland verbringen. Ich möchte in England arbeiten, um mein Englisch zu verbessern. Danach werde ich an der Universität Medizin studieren.
After my Abitur I will spend a year abroad. I would like to work in England to improve my English. After that I will study medicine at university.
Key professions vocabulary for GCSE: der Arzt / die Ärztin (doctor), der Lehrer / die Lehrerin (teacher), der Ingenieur / die Ingenieurin (engineer), der Anwalt / die Anwältin (lawyer), der Programmierer / die Programmiererin (programmer), der Kaufmann / die Kauffrau (businessperson), der Handwerker / die Handwerkerin (craftsperson), der Journalist / die Journalistin (journalist). Note the feminine forms ending in -in (plural: -innen).
To say what you want to become, use werden (to become): Ich will Ärztin werden (I want to become a doctor). Ich möchte Lehrer werden (I would like to become a teacher). Use als (as) when describing a job: Ich möchte als Ingenieur arbeiten (I would like to work as an engineer). For reasons, use weil: Ich will Ärztin werden, weil ich Menschen helfen möchte (I want to become a doctor because I want to help people).
Germany has a strong tradition of das Handwerk (craft/trade), with over 1 million craft businesses. The Meister (master craftsman) qualification is highly respected. In Austria, the Lehre (apprenticeship) system is similarly valued. In Switzerland, vocational training is the most popular path, with over 70% of students choosing an apprenticeship rather than university.
Ich möchte Programmierer werden, weil ich Informatik interessant finde und gute Karrierechancen haben möchte. Ich werde Informatik an der Technischen Universität studieren.
I would like to become a programmer because I find computer science interesting and want to have good career prospects. I will study computer science at the Technical University.
The Duales Ausbildungssystem (dual education system) is one of Germany's most distinctive cultural features. Students combine practical work in a company (der Ausbildungsbetrieb) with theoretical study at a vocational school (die Berufsschule). Typically, students spend 3–4 days per week at work and 1–2 days at school. The training lasts 2–3.5 years.
There are over 300 recognised training professions (anerkannte Ausbildungsberufe) in Germany, from der Automobilkaufmann (car salesperson) to der Zahnmedizinische Fachangestellte (dental assistant). During the training, apprentices earn a salary (die Ausbildungsvergütung). This system is credited with keeping youth unemployment low in Germany compared to other European countries.
In the exam, mentioning the dual system demonstrates cultural knowledge. You could say: In Deutschland gibt es das duale Ausbildungssystem, wo man gleichzeitig im Betrieb arbeitet und in die Berufsschule geht (In Germany there is the dual training system, where you work in a company at the same time as going to vocational school). In Austria, the system is called Lehre and functions similarly. Switzerland also uses this model extensively.
Das duale Ausbildungssystem in Deutschland ist sehr erfolgreich. Man arbeitet im Betrieb und geht gleichzeitig in die Berufsschule. Das ist praktisch und man bekommt auch Geld.
