At GCSE level, you need to name school subjects and give opinions about them. Key subjects: Mathe(matik) (maths), Englisch (English), Deutsch (German), Geschichte (history), Geografie (geography), die Naturwissenschaften (sciences), Biologie, Chemie, Physik, Kunst (art), Musik (music), Sport (PE), Informatik (computer science). Note that school subjects in German are always capitalised as they are nouns.
To express opinions about subjects, use a range of structures: Ich mag Mathe, weil es interessant ist (I like maths because it is interesting). Ich hasse Geschichte, weil es langweilig ist (I hate history because it is boring). Mein Lieblingsfach ist Physik (My favourite subject is physics). Ich bin gut in Englisch (I am good at English). Ich bin schlecht in Chemie (I am bad at chemistry). The preposition in takes the dative for school subjects: in + dem = im.
The German school system is different from the UK. After primary school (die Grundschule, years 1–4), pupils are divided into different school types: das Gymnasium (academic school, leads to das Abitur), die Realschule (intermediate school) and die Hauptschule (basic school). In Austria, the system is similar with das Gymnasium and die Mittelschule. In Switzerland, cantons decide their own systems.
Mein Lieblingsfach ist Mathe, weil ich Zahlen mag und der Lehrer sehr gut erklärt. Ich hasse Kunst, weil ich nicht gut zeichnen kann. Am besten finde ich aber Informatik.
My favourite subject is maths because I like numbers and the teacher explains very well. I hate art because I cannot draw well. But I think computer science is the best.
The German school day is structured differently from the UK. School typically starts at 7:30 or 8:00 AM and lessons last 45 minutes. There is a long break (die große Pause) of 15–20 minutes mid-morning. Traditionally, German schools finished at lunchtime (die Halbtagsschule), but die Ganztagsschule (full-day school) is becoming more common, with afternoon activities and homework supervision (die Hausaufgabenbetreuung).
Key school vocabulary includes: der Unterricht (lesson/teaching), die Stunde (lesson/period), die Hausaufgaben (homework), das Zeugnis (school report), die Note (grade/mark — in Germany, 1 is the best and 6 is the worst), die Klassenarbeit (class test), die Prüfung (exam), das Schuljahr (school year), das Pausenbrot (break-time snack).
In Austria, school also often ends at lunchtime, with die Nachmittagsbetreuung (afternoon care) available for working parents. Swiss schools typically have a longer lunch break (1–2 hours) where children go home. Understanding these differences from the British system is valuable for the intercultural element of the exam.
In meiner Schule beginnt der Unterricht um acht Uhr. Wir haben sechs Stunden pro Tag. In der großen Pause esse ich mein Pausenbrot. Die Hausaufgaben mache ich zu Hause.
In my school lessons begin at eight o'clock. We have six periods per day. During the long break I eat my break-time snack. I do my homework at home.
To describe your school, use adjectives and the correct case endings. Key phrases: Meine Schule ist groß/klein (My school is big/small), Sie liegt in der Stadtmitte/auf dem Land (It is located in the city centre/in the countryside), Sie hat einen Sportplatz/eine Turnhalle (It has a sports field/a gym), Es gibt eine Bibliothek und eine Mensa (There is a library and a canteen).
Use es gibt (there is/are) + accusative to describe facilities: Es gibt einen Computerraum (There is a computer room). Use man kann (one can) to describe activities: Man kann im Sportverein Fußball spielen (One can play football in the sports club). For Higher tier, use relative clauses: Meine Schule, die im Zentrum liegt, hat über 800 Schüler (My school, which is in the centre, has over 800 pupils).
German schools often have a strong Partnerschaft (partnership) with schools in other countries, especially for language exchanges (der Schüleraustausch). Many German students do an exchange with a British school. This is an excellent topic for the speaking exam as it allows you to compare both school systems.
Meine Schule ist ziemlich groß und liegt in der Stadtmitte. Es gibt eine Turnhalle, einen Sportplatz und eine Bibliothek. Man kann viele AGs besuchen, zum Beispiel Theater-AG und Sport-AG.
