Reds vs Whites 1918–21, Trotsky's Red Army, War Communism, the Red Terror, Kronstadt 1921, famine, and Lenin's New Economic Policy.
Civil War (1918–21): Reds (centre, railways, industry) vs Whites (divided peripheries, foreign intervention) vs Greens (peasant armies). Trotsky’s Red Army: conscription, ex-Tsarist officers under commissars, death penalty, armoured trains. War Communism: grain requisitioning, nationalisation, banned trade → famine 1921–22 (~5m dead); Kronstadt rising (March 1921) — ‘Soviets without Bolsheviks’ — crushed. NEP (1921): tax in kind, private trade legalised, state kept the ‘commanding heights’; Scissors Crisis 1923; Lenin’s strokes 1922–24 → the succession.
'The Reds won the Civil War because of Trotsky's leadership.' How far do you agree? (16 + 4)
YES: built a ~5-million-man army, used ex-officers with commissars, defended the rail hub triangle. NO: Whites were geographically split and politically divided; peasants feared landowner restoration; Red Terror secured the rear; intervention was half-hearted. Verdict: Trotsky organised victory; geography and White disunity gifted it.
Q1: Describe two features of War Communism.
Q2: Give two reasons the Whites lost the Civil War.
Q3: What happened at Kronstadt (1921)?
Q4: Explain why Lenin introduced the NEP (two reasons, 4 marks).
Q5: 'War Communism was necessary to win the war.' How far do you agree? (16 + 4)
NEP = ideological retreat, economic recovery — the classic two-sided verdict. Reds-vs-Whites needs geography: the Red industrial centre vs four scattered White fronts.
Spec 8145. Paper 1: Understanding the modern world (one period study + one wider-world depth study). Paper 2: Shaping the nation (one thematic study with historic environment + one British depth study including the historic environment). AQA's AO4 historic-environment questions reward site-specific knowledge, not general period knowledge.
Always check: specification details change — confirm paper structure and set texts against the current specification for your exam year.
BETRAYAL: private trade and NEPmen restored capitalism; kulaks grew rich; socialist ideals abandoned; Bukharin’s "enrich yourselves" scandalised purists.
SAVED IT: production recovered to 1913 levels by 1926; famine ended; the party survived (Kronstadt proved the alternative was collapse); Lenin called it a "retreat to take two steps back for one forward".
Judgement: the NEP saved the revolution’s STATE while betraying its ECONOMY — and the party never forgave it (Stalin ended it in 1929). Conclude: betrayal of theory, loyalty to survival — argue the party chose survival, proving what it really valued.
The sailors of Kronstadt — the fortress island guarding Petrograd, heroes of 1917 ("the reddest of the red") — rose against War Communism: for re-elected soviets, free speech for socialists, release of political prisoners, an end to requisitioning. Tukhachevsky stormed the ice fortress with 60,000 troops across frozen Gulf ice (7–18 March); ~10,000 casualties; survivors shot or sent to the first gulags. Lenin called it "the flash that lit up reality better than anything else" — the NEP was announced days later at the same Party Congress. Exam use: Kronstadt proves War Communism had broken the regime’s own base — the most persuasive single piece of evidence for any "War Communism failed" essay.
