⚡ What is Arousal?
Arousal: A state of physical and psychological readiness and activation. It is the level of excitement, alertness and energy a performer experiences. Arousal exists on a continuum from deep sleep (very low) to extreme excitement or panic (very high).
Arousal affects sporting performance in several ways:
Increases heart rate, blood flow and adrenaline release
Affects concentration and attention
Influences muscle tension and coordination
Impacts decision-making speed and accuracy
Can enhance or hinder performance depending on the level
Arousal Continuum:
Deep sleep → Drowsiness → Relaxed → Alert → Excited → Agitated → Panicked
Low arousal ← ← ← ← ← ← ← → → → → → → → High arousal
Performance is best somewhere in the middle - this is the optimal level of arousal.
📈 The Inverted-U Theory
Inverted-U Theory (Yerkes-Dodson Law): The theory that performance improves as arousal increases, but only up to an optimal point. Beyond this point, further increases in arousal lead to a decline in performance. When graphed, this relationship forms an inverted U shape.
How the Inverted-U Works
Low arousal: Performer is under-aroused - lethargic, slow reactions, lack of focus, unmotivated. Performance is poor because the body is not sufficiently activated.
Optimal arousal: Performer is at their ideal level - alert, focused, motivated, coordinated. Performance is at its peak because the body and mind are perfectly prepared.
High arousal: Performer is over-aroused - anxious, tense, loss of coordination, narrow attention, poor decision-making. Performance declines because excessive arousal interferes with control.
Not all performers and skills have the same optimal arousal level. The type of skill being performed determines how much arousal is ideal.
Gross Skills and Complex Open Skills
Gross skills involve large muscle groups and powerful movements
Complex open skills require fast reactions and adaptations
These skills benefit from higher arousal
High arousal increases adrenaline, aggression and reaction speed
Sporting Examples
Rugby tackle: A high arousal level is optimal - the player needs aggression, speed and power to make an effective tackle.
Boxing: High arousal is needed for aggression, rapid reactions and explosive punching power.
Sprint start: High arousal ensures the fastest possible reaction to the gun.
Fine Skills and Closed Skills
Fine skills require precision and small muscle control
Closed skills need calm, controlled execution
These skills benefit from lower arousal
Too much arousal causes muscle tension, shaking and loss of fine control
Sporting Examples
Darts: Low arousal is optimal - the player needs a steady hand and fine motor control. Too much arousal causes trembling and loss of accuracy.
Golf putt: Low arousal is best - the player needs calm concentration and delicate touch. High arousal leads to tense muscles and poor distance control.
Snooker: Low arousal is ideal - precise cueing requires minimal muscle tension and maximum focus.

📉 Zone of Optimal Functioning (ZOF)
Zone of Optimal Functioning (ZOF): Each individual performer has their own personal zone of optimal arousal where they perform at their best. This zone varies from person to person - some performers need high arousal to perform well, while others perform better at lower arousal levels.
Some performers are naturally calm and perform best with lower arousal
Others thrive on high arousal and need to be "pumped up" to perform well
Performers must learn to recognise their own ZOF through experience
Coaches should help performers find their individual optimal zone

😰 Stress Management Techniques
When arousal is too high, performers need strategies to reduce it. When arousal is too low, they need to increase it. The following techniques help manage arousal levels.
1. Deep Breathing
Slow, controlled breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system
Reduces heart rate and muscle tension
Helps the performer calm down when over-aroused or anxious
Technique: Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 2, exhale for 6 counts
Used before free throws, penalties, or any high-pressure situation
Sporting Example
A footballer takes deep breaths before taking a penalty kick to reduce anxiety and calm their heart rate, ensuring a more composed and accurate shot.
2. Mental Rehearsal / Visualisation
Mentally practising the skill before performing it
Creates a positive mental image of successful performance
Reduces anxiety by increasing confidence and familiarity
Can be used to raise arousal (imagining an exciting performance) or lower it (visualising calm execution)
Strengthens the neural pathways associated with the skill
Sporting Example
A gymnast visualises their entire floor routine before stepping onto the mat, imagining each movement flowing perfectly. This reduces anxiety and primes their motor programmes for correct execution.
3. Positive Self-Talk
Replacing negative thoughts with positive, encouraging statements
Builds confidence and reduces anxiety
Can increase motivation and focus
Prevents the performer from dwelling on mistakes or fear of failure
Examples: "I've practised this thousands of times", "I am ready", "Stay calm and focused"
Sporting Example
A tennis player who has just double-faulted uses positive self-talk: "That's gone - focus on the next point. I've served well all match." This prevents a drop in confidence and maintains appropriate arousal.

The zone of optimal functioning (ZOF) is the individual performer's personal range of arousal levels where they perform at their best. It differs from the inverted-U theory because the inverted-U suggests a general optimal point for all performers, whereas ZOF recognises that each individual has their own optimal zone. Some performers perform best at higher arousal levels, while others perform best at lower levels. ZOF accounts for individual differences that the inverted-U theory does not.
The gymnast could: (1) Use deep breathing before their routine - breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 2, exhale for 6 - to lower their heart rate and reduce muscle tension. (2) Use mental rehearsal - visualise themselves performing the routine perfectly, which builds confidence and primes the motor programmes. (3) Use positive self-talk - replace "I'm nervous, I might fall" with "I've practised this routine hundreds of times, I am ready" to manage anxiety. (4) Combine these techniques to bring their arousal down from the over-aroused zone to their optimal level.
Positive self-talk can increase arousal when a performer is under-aroused by using motivational statements like "Let's go! I'm ready for this!" or "Bring the energy!" - this is useful before contact sports or explosive events. Positive self-talk can decrease arousal when a performer is over-aroused by using calming statements like "Stay calm and focused" or "I've done this before, trust my training" - this is useful before precision tasks like penalty kicks or gymnastics routines. The key is matching the self-talk to the arousal adjustment needed.
