For Graphical Representations, you must know:
Q: What type of chart would you use to compare the favourite subjects of boys and girls in a school?
Q: From a cumulative frequency curve, the total frequency is 80. At what cumulative frequency value do you read the lower quartile?

โ Plotting cumulative frequency at the midpoint of each class โ Cumulative frequency must be plotted at the upper class boundary, since it represents the running total up to and including that boundary value.
โ Joining scatter graph points with lines โ Scatter graphs should show individual plotted points only; joining them implies a sequential relationship that does not exist between the two variables.
โ Using a bar chart for continuous data without converting to a histogram โ Bar charts are for discrete or categorical data; continuous data should be displayed using a histogram (no gaps between bars) or frequency polygon.
โ Reading the median from an ogive at half the x-axis range instead of half the total frequency โ The median corresponds to the 50th percentile, so read at cumulative frequency = total รท 2, then find the corresponding x-value.
The grouped frequency table shows the marks of 40 students in a test. Draw a cumulative frequency curve and use it to find the median and interquartile range. 0โ20: 4, 20โ40: 8, 40โ60: 16, 60โ80: 8, 80โ100: 4
Plot cumulative frequencies at upper class boundaries: 20: 4, 40: 12, 60: 28, 80: 36, 100: 40 Draw a smooth S-shaped curve through the points. Median at cumulative frequency = 40 รท 2 = 20: Read from 20 on the y-axis โ approximately 50 on the x-axis. Lower quartile at cumulative frequency = 40 รท 4 = 10: Read from 10 โ approximately 35. Upper quartile at cumulative frequency = 3 ร 40 รท 4 = 30: Read from 30 โ approximately 65. Interquartile range = 65 โ 35 = 30 marks.
