Q: What is the advantage of using a tally chart when collecting data?
Q: Data is recorded in the grouped frequency table with class intervals 0โ9, 10โ19, 20โ29. What is the class width of each interval?
Q: In a two-way table, 40 students study Biology, 30 study Chemistry, and 15 study both. How many study at least one subject?
Q: A grouped frequency table has class intervals 5 โค x < 15 and 15 โค x < 25. What is the midpoint of the second class?
Q: The total frequency is 200 and the frequency of the class 10 โค x < 20 is 50. What is the relative frequency of this class?
โ Writing class intervals as 0โ10, 10โ20 so that 10 appears in two intervals โ Use inequality notation such as 0 โค x < 10, 10 โค x < 20 so each value belongs to exactly one class.
โ Using the upper class boundary as the midpoint โ The midpoint is the average of the lower and upper class boundaries: (lower + upper) รท 2.
โ Forgetting to subtract the overlap when combining two categories in a two-way table โ When two categories overlap (e.g. both Biology and Chemistry), subtract the intersection once to avoid double-counting.
โ Confusing frequency with frequency density โ Frequency is the raw count; frequency density is frequency รท class width, used specifically for histograms with unequal class widths.
A survey of 60 households recorded the number of pets owned. The results are shown in the grouped frequency table below. Estimate the mean number of pets. Class intervals: 0โ2 (f=22), 2โ4 (f=18), 4โ6 (f=12), 6โ8 (f=8)

The mean is estimated because we use midpoints rather than the actual data values within each class.
