🎯 Learning Objectives

📋 Key Definitions and Core Concepts

el pretérito: the completed-past tense (fui, hablé, comió); used for bounded events and narrative milestones
el imperfecto: the ongoing/habitual past (era, hablaba, comía); used for description, background and repeated action
el pluscuamperfecto: había + participio (había comido) — the before-the-past tense; also used in si-clause type 3
el subjuntivo: the mood of non-fact: desire, doubt, emotion, impersonal opinion, purpose — the A-level's decisive discriminator
el imperfecto de subjuntivo: the -ra/-se subjunctive built from the 3rd-person plural preterite (tuvieron → tuviera); required in si-clause type 2
el pronombre doble: the combined direct+indirect pronoun, indirect first, se-substituted (se lo di) — a favourite translation trap
laísmo y leísmo: dialectal pronoun habits: leísmo (le for masculine person) is RAE-accepted; laísmo (la for indirect female person) is not
los participios irregulares: visto, hecho, dicho, escrito, puesto, roto, vuelto, muerto — compulsory for pluperfect and passive constructions

Tiempos del indicativo: formas y usos

The indicative tenses carry AO3 in translation and essay; the exam's discriminations are preterite vs imperfect and the irregular stems of future/conditional.

TiempoFormaciónIrregulares esencialesUso clave
Presente-o/-as/-a…e→ie (pensar), o→ue (poder), e→i (pedir), -go (tengo), -zco (conozco), -oy (doy, soy, voy, estoy)hecho actual; «desde hace» + presente

The classic discrimination — pretérito vs imperfecto — is decided by meaning-change verbs, which translation papers test every year:

VerboImperfectoPretérito
conocerconocía (ya sabía quién era)conocí (me enteré por primera vez)
sabersabía (tenía la información)supe (me enteré / descubrí)
quererquería (deseaba)quise (intenté) / no quise (me negué)
poderpodía (era capaz)pude (lo logré) / no pude (fracasé)

Also master desde hacía + imperfecto (had been doing) and the passive with ser + participio vs estar + participio (resultant state).

Three constructions complete the indicative bank. El progresivo: estar + gerundio (está comiendo) for action in progress, and llevar + gerundio (lleva dos años trabajando) for duration — the exam's preferred way of saying «has been doing». Los verbos tipo gustar: conjugated with the indirect object and agreeing with what pleases — me gustan los deportes, le encanta viajar; the plural agreement is a constant translation trap. El futuro de probabilidad: ¿dónde estará? (I wonder where he is) — the future and conditional expressing conjecture about present and past, a staple of reading and listening papers. Two habits for the exam: in translation, decide aspect first (finished event? background? in progress?) and only then choose the tense; in essays, keep preterite for milestones and imperfect for texture — one paragraph that mixes both correctly is worth more than a page of subjunctive misused.

El subjuntivo: el discriminador del nivel A

The subjunctive separates the top band from the middle: examiners specifically look for it in essays, speaking and the translation passage. Formación (present): drop the -o of the yo form and add the opposite endings — tengo → tenga, hago → haga, conozco → conozca. Imperfecto de subjuntivo: take the third-person plural of the preterite, drop -ron, add -ra — tuvieron → tuviera, dijeron → dijera, fueron → fuera (the -se forms are equivalent but rare in exams).

Triggers by category:

Las tres frases con «si» — the single most examined grammar structure:

TipoEstructuraEjemplo
1. realsi + presente → futurosi estudias, aprobarás
2. hipotéticasi + imperfecto de subjuntivo → condicionalsi tuviera dinero, viajaría
3. imposible (pasado)si + pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo → condicional compuestosi hubiera sabido, habría venido

Never put a subjunctive directly after si in types 1-2 — the subjunctive lives in the si-clause only via the -ra imperfect or the pluperfect. In speaking, deploy two subjunctives per answer minimum; in the essay, aim for five or six with variety (desire, purpose, si-clause type 2, aunque + subj).

Four refinements to the subjunctive bank. El subjuntivo en oraciones de relativo: busco un piso que tenga terraza (I'm looking for one that may exist) vs busco el piso que tiene terraza (I know it exists) — a favourite of translation papers. La estructura «no es que… sino que»: no es que no quiera, sino que no puedo — the A* negation frame. Ojalá: ojalá + presente de subjuntivo (possible wish) vs ojalá + imperfecto (impossible/counterfactual wish: ojalá tuviera más tiempo). El pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo beyond si-clauses: after past-tense emotion/doubt triggers — no creía que hubiera llegado. Self-check ritual: in every essay, verify one desire phrase, one purpose clause (para que), one si-clause type 2 and one aunque — four subjunctive environments, chosen in advance, guarantee variety without improvisation.

Pronombres, ser/estar y por/para

Pronombres directos e indirectos: lo/la/los/las (direct), le/les (indirect). Position: before a conjugated verb, but attached to infinitives, gerunds (+ accent: dándoselo) and affirmative commands (dímelo). The double pronoun puts indirect first and substitutes se for le/les: le doy el libro → se lo doy — the translation trap. Relative pronouns: que (default), quien (after prepositions, people), el que / la que (clarifier), lo que (abstract «that which»), cuyo/a (whose — the A* marker: la autora cuyo libro leímos).

Ser vs estar — DOCTOR vs PLACE:

SER (DOCTOR)ESTAR (PLACE)
Description: es altaPosition: está sentada

Agradecimiento: gracias por todoEstar para + infinitivo (about to)

Four refinements. Posición de los pronombres con infinitivos: hay que decírselo, quiero dárselo — attached with written accent; before conjugated verbs, detached: se lo dije. El «se» impersonal y pasivo: se dice que… (it is said), se construyeron muchos pisos (passive-like) — the exam's standard way of avoiding an agent. Preposiciones de lugar/tiempo: a (motion to: voy a Madrid), en (static in: estoy en Madrid), desde/hace (since/for: desde 2020, hace cinco años). Los falsos amigos that translation papers set: embarazada (pregnant, not embarrassed), éxito (success, not exit), actualmente (currently, not actually), asistir a (to attend, not to assist), realizar (to carry out, not to realise). Fix the accents habit too: meaning changes with the stress (el/él, mas/más, si/sí) — accent errors cost language marks in every essay and translation.

💡 Worked Example

Exam-style: Traduce al español: «If I had known that she was working in Madrid, I would have visited her, because although it rains, I always travel to see her on Fridays.»

❓ Practice Questions & Mark Schemes

Traduce: «I doubt that the new law will solve the problem, although I hope that they change it soon.»
Answer: (1) Si tengo tiempo, iré al gimnasio mañana (tipo real: presente → futuro). (2) Si tuviera tiempo, iría al gimnasio este año (tipo hipotético: imperfecto de subjuntivo → condicional). (3) Si hubiera tenido tiempo, habría ido al gimnasio ayer (tipo imposible: pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo → condicional compuesto). Regla de oro: jamás subjuntivo presente después de «si» — el subjuntivo solo aparece en el si-cláusula en sus formas -ra o pluscuamperfecta.
Traduce usando pronombres dobles: «They gave it to me yesterday, and I gave it to her this morning.» (estilo examen)
