Speaking (IRP) and Essay Skills
Year 1 / ASYear 2 / A-LevelAQA, Edexcel, WJEC/Eduqas, CCEA
A* skills for AQA and Edexcel Spanish: the stimulus card and Individual Research Project, 40/32-mark essay frames, A* connectors and register — how to argue, not just answer.
🎯 Learning Objectives
Structure the stimulus-card discussion and the IRP to the requirements of AQA 7692/3 and Edexcel 9SP0 Paper 3
Select and exploit Spanish-language sources for the IRP: hypothesis, presentation, anticipated questions
Build essay paragraphs that integrate theme, evidence and judgement (PEA/PEEL) without plot retelling
Deploy A* connectors, subjunctive-rich opinion phrases and consistent register in speech and writing
Self-assess against mark-scheme criteria before submission or exam day
📋 Key Definitions and Core Concepts
el IRP (proyecto de investigación individual): the Individual Research Project: student-chosen topic, researched in Spanish sources, presented and discussed in Paper 3
la tarjeta de estímulo: the stimulus card: a sub-theme with data/image discussed spontaneously in Task 1 of the speaking exam
la tesis: the one-sentence claim an essay argues; every paragraph must serve it — the anti-narration device
el marco PEA/PEEL: Punto → Evidencia → Análisis (→ Enlace): the paragraph frame that turns opinion into marks
el registro formal: consistent formal register: no colloquialisms, impersonal constructions, present subjunctive opinion phrases
los conectores: the discourse glue (no obstante, cabe señalar que, a pesar de que) that makes argument visible to the examiner
el contraargumento: the opposing view stated and rebutted — what separates top-band essays from competent ones
la improvisación estructurada: speaking technique for the card: opinion first, two reasons, an example, a conclusion — structure without script
Both boards' speaking test has two tasks. AQA 7692/3: Task 1 is the discussion of a tarjeta de estímulo on one of the sub-themes (you are given one card from your chosen sub-theme, with a short preparation window) — the examiner wants an opinion immediately, then reasoning. Task 2 is the IRP: a two-minute presentation on your individually researched topic, followed by roughly ten minutes of discussion probing what you read and concluded. Edexcel 9SP0 Paper 3: Task 1 is a discussion on a chosen theme from a stimulus (a short reading plus questions), Task 2 the IRP with presentation plus discussion. Marks are broadly even between the two tasks; the IRP is worth half your speaking grade, so choose it well.
Choosing the IRP: pick a topic with abundant fuentes en español (INE statistics, El País/El Mundo features, academic summaries), a personal angle the examiner can hear you care about, and no overlap with your essay film/text. Build it as an argument, not a report: hypothesis («mi hipótesis es que…»), evidence from named sources («según datos del INE de 2023…»), a counter-view, and a conclusion you defend. Anticipate questions: for every claim, prepare the follow-up («¿por qué?», «¿qué fuentes usaste?», «¿y si…?»). The discussion rewards you for steering: answer, extend, hand the question back («¿usted qué opina?» is wasted; «lo que me interesa es si esto cambiará en el futuro…» is not).
The card, structured: opinion first (two seconds in), two reasons with connectors, one quantified example, a mini-conclusion, then invite development. Never read the card aloud; never describe the image — react to it. If you freeze, deploy the structure: «A mi parecer… por dos razones: en primer lugar…, en segundo lugar… Por ejemplo… En conclusión…» — the skeleton carries any card on any sub-theme.
The mark scheme's criteria translate into practice. Pronunciación y entonación: audibility matters more than accent purity — errors that block comprehension cost marks; meaning-bearing accents (sí/si, él/el) are the cheap fixes. Interacción: the discussion is marked as a conversation, not a monologue — respond, extend, ask back; a candidate who answers five questions with five monologues scores below one who steers two. Calidad de argumento: opinion + reason + evidence + concession, in Spanish, immediately. What examiners penalise hardest: el discurso memorizado — a recited IRP that survives no follow-up question; prepare talking points, not a script. Preparation windows are short (minutes, not hours), so rehearse the card skeleton until it is automatic: opinión → razones → ejemplo → conclusión → steering. And prepare your sub-theme's data in advance: every card comes with statistics, and a candidate who can say «según los datos de la tarjeta, aunque…» already sounds analytical.
El ensayo: estructura y criterios (40/32 marcas)
The essay (AQA 7692/2X: 40 marks, roughly 30 knowledge/analysis + 10 language; Edexcel 9SP0 Paper 2: 32 marks) is marked on what you argue, not what you know. The universal frame:
Introducción: context in one sentence + la tesis in one sentence. No scene-setting padding.
Párrafos PEA: Punto (topic sentence) → Evidencia (named scene, statistic, quotation or law) → Análisis (what the evidence proves about the thesis). Three paragraphs is plenty; quality beats quantity.
Contraargumento: the best reading against you, stated fairly («algunos críticos sostienen que… sin embargo…»), then rebutted. Top-band answers always have one.
Conclusión: a matizada judgement that answers the question directly — «en conclusión, hasta cierto punto… aunque…». Never summarize the essay.
Mark-killers to avoid: plot retelling (the number-one killer in film/text essays), invented statistics, describing instead of analysing technique, and opinion without justification («me gusta mucho» scores nothing; «me parece eficaz porque demuestra…» scores in the top band). Mark-winners: Spanish-language quotations from the film/text between inverted commas; dated statistics with a source; explicit reference to the question's command word («hasta qué punto» demands a scale, not a yes); and consistent formal register. For language marks: subjunctive variety (desire, purpose, si-clause type 2), conditional for hypothesis, and zero anglicisms. A safe essay length is roughly 300 words for AQA — long enough to argue, short enough to control.
Command words decide the essay's shape, and they differ by board. AQA:«analiza» (technique + meaning), «hasta qué punto» (scale + judgement), «discute» (both sides + verdict); the recommended length is around 300 words, so plan ruthlessly. Edexcel: the essay rewards developed analysis across two or more angles under the same 32-mark rubric; no word limit, but every examiner prefers a controlled 400 to an uncontrolled 600. Planificación: spend the first five minutes on the plan — tesis, three scene/statistic anchors, one counter-argument — because an essay that discovers its argument halfway through never recovers. Lengua (10/32 marcas): subjunctive variety, conditional hypothesis, connective scaffolding and zero anglicisms; complex structures attempted and wrong score better than simple structures repeated — the rubric explicitly rewards ambitious language. Final check before the conclusion: reread the question, and make the last sentence answer it verbatim in judgement form.
Conectores, registro y frases de A*
Connectors make argument visible — the examiner can mark structure only if it is signalled. Learn these by category, not alphabetically:
Función
Conectores de A*
Organizar
Registro formal: avoid colloquial fillers (vale, o sea, cosas así) in the speaking exam's assessed moments; prefer impersonal and passive-flavoured constructions (cabe señalar, se podría argüir, es fundamental subrayar); use usted implicitly through register (conditional requests: «¿podría repetir la pregunta?» — the recovery phrase for a missed question).
The A* sentence patterns that fit any topic:
(si-clause type 3 in essay form)
Final exam-day drill: every paragraph you write or speak should contain at least one connector, one piece of dated evidence and one subjunctive. That trio, repeated, is what a top-band script looks like from the inside.
Spoken register needs its own toolset. Legitimate fillers that buy thinking time without penalty: bueno, entonces… / es decir… / a ver… / lo importante es… — one filler per answer maximum, deployed at a transition. Accent quick wins for speaking marks: the meaning-bearing pairs (hablo/habló, si/sí, mas/más) and the /b-v/, /ll-y/ and final-consonant habits most candidates can correct in a week of drilling. Falsos amigos that embarrass in speaking: embarazada, éxito, actualmente, constipado (a cold!). The recovery phrases to memorise verbatim: «¿Podría repetir la pregunta?», «Si le he entendido bien, me pregunta sobre…», «No he investigado ese aspecto, pero lo que sí he estudiado es…» — three sentences that turn any disaster into strategy. Final exam-day ritual, spoken and written alike: connector + dated evidence + subjunctive, every paragraph, every answer — the trio is the whole technique compressed.
💡 Worked Example
❓ Practice Questions & Mark Schemes
