Describing your town/region; what there is to do; facilities; advantages and disadvantages of where you live
Q1: Write 4 sentences in German about your local area.
Q2: Write a paragraph (40-60 words) giving your opinion on your local area.
Q3: Translate into German: "I think your local area is important because..."
Students often use the wrong case after prepositions. Wrong: In meiner Stadt gibt es einen Park (in + dative for location is correct). Correct: In meiner Stadt gibt es einen Park — in takes DATIVE for location. BUT: Ich gehe in die Stadt — in takes ACCUSATIVE for movement towards.
Writing task: Write about describing your town/region; what there is to do; facilities; advantages and disadvantages of where you live.
A grade 9 answer will: use at least three tenses accurately; include complex structures (subordinate clauses, modal verbs, separable verbs); show precise grammar (cases, word order, adjective endings); express and justify opinions; include cultural knowledge about DACH countries; use a wide range of vocabulary; be well-organised with connecting words (außerdem, jedoch, trotzdem, zusammenfassend).
Mark scheme: Content (relevance and detail) + Quality of language (accuracy and range) = total marks
AO1 — Knowledge: Show understanding of Your Local Area by demonstrating accurate vocabulary and grammatical structures in the target language.
AO2 — Application: Apply your knowledge of Your Local Area to understand and produce language in listening, reading, speaking and writing contexts.
AO3 — Analysis & Evaluation: Analyse and evaluate linguistic features related to Your Local Area, demonstrating critical awareness of meaning, context and cultural references.
At GCSE level, you must be able to describe where you live in detail. Key vocabulary: die Stadt (town/city), das Dorf (village), die Gegend (area/neighbourhood), das Stadtzentrum (city centre), der Vorort (suburb), auf dem Land (in the countryside), die Altstadt (old town), der Marktplatz (market square), der Rathaus (town hall), die Kirche (church), der Park (park), der Brunnen (fountain).
Use es gibt (there is/are) + accusative to describe what your area has: In meiner Stadt gibt es ein Schwimmbad, eine Bibliothek und ein Einkaufszentrum (In my town there is a swimming pool, a library and a shopping centre). Use mein Wohnort liegt (my home town is located) for position: Mein Wohnort liegt im Süden Deutschlands, nahe der österreichischen Grenze (My home town is in the south of Germany, near the Austrian border).
German towns have distinctive features. The Fußgängerzone (pedestrian zone) in the city centre is typical — most German towns have car-free shopping streets. The Wochenmarkt (weekly market) on the main square sells fresh local produce. Many towns have a Stadtfest (town festival) or Altstadtfest (old town festival) each year. In Austria, the Stadtkern (city centre) often has baroque architecture. Swiss towns are known for their cleanliness and efficient public transport.
Ich wohne in einer mittelgroßen Stadt in Norddeutschland. Es gibt eine schöne Altstadt mit einem Marktplatz und einem Rathaus. In der Fußgängerzone kann man gut einkaufen.
I live in a medium-sized town in northern Germany. There is a beautiful old town with a market square and a town hall. In the pedestrian zone you can shop well.
For the exam, you must discuss the pros and cons of your area. Advantages: Es gibt gute Verkehrsanbindungen (There are good transport connections), Die Stadt ist lebendig (The city is vibrant), Man kann viel unternehmen (One can do a lot), Es gibt viele Freizeitmöglichkeiten (There are many leisure opportunities), Die Nachbarschaft ist freundlich (The neighbourhood is friendly).
Disadvantages: Es gibt zu viel Verkehr (There is too much traffic), Die Luftverschmutzung ist schlimm (Air pollution is bad), Es ist zu laut (It is too noisy), Die Mieten sind sehr hoch (Rents are very high), Es gibt nicht genug Grünflächen (There are not enough green spaces). Use der Vorteil (advantage) and der Nachteil (disadvantage) to structure your answer: Der größte Vorteil ist... / Der größte Nachteil ist....
In Germany, there is a housing shortage (der Wohnungsmangel) in major cities, especially Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. Rents have risen dramatically in recent years. The concept of Mietpreisbremse (rent brake/rent cap) was introduced to control rising rents. In Austria, Vienna has a large proportion of social housing (der Gemeindebau) — about 60% of Vienna's residents live in subsidised housing, making it one of the most affordable European capitals.
Der größte Vorteil meiner Stadt ist, dass es gute Verkehrsanbindungen gibt. Der größte Nachteil ist der Verkehr und die Luftverschmutzung. Ich würde lieber in einem kleineren Ort wohnen.
The biggest advantage of my town is that there are good transport connections. The biggest disadvantage is the traffic and air pollution. I would prefer to live in a smaller place.
Discussing improvements to your area is a common exam task. Use man sollte (one should) and es wäre gut, wenn (it would be good if): Man sollte mehr Fahrradwege bauen (One should build more cycle paths). Es wäre gut, wenn es mehr Parks gäbe (It would be good if there were more parks). Ich würde gerne einen neuen Jugendclub haben (I would like to have a new youth club).
Germany is investing in die Verkehrsberuhigung (traffic calming) — many cities are creating Fahrradstraßen (cycle streets), expanding die U-Bahn and tram networks, and introducing Umweltzonen (low-emission zones) where older, polluting cars are banned. Munich, Freiburg and Berlin are leading examples of green urban planning. The concept of die autofreie Stadt (car-free city) is gaining popularity.
For Higher tier, use the subjunctive for hypothetical improvements: Wenn ich Bürgermeister wäre, würde ich mehr Geld für Jugendzentren ausgeben (If I were mayor, I would spend more money on youth centres). This uses wenn + Konjunktiv II in the conditional clause and würde + infinitive in the main clause.
Wenn ich Bürgermeisterin wäre, würde ich mehr Fahrradwege und Grünflächen schaffen. Es wäre gut, wenn es einen neuen Jugendclub gäbe. Die Stadt sollte auch die Luftqualität verbessern.
If I were mayor, I would create more cycle paths and green spaces. It would be good if there were a new youth club. The city should also improve air quality.
