Volunteering (das Ehrenamt) is deeply rooted in German society. Over 30% of Germans do some form of voluntary work, often through der Verein (club/association). The Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ — voluntary social year) allows young people aged 16–27 to spend a year working in social, ecological or cultural organisations while receiving a small allowance. The Freiwilliges Soziales Year and Other Programmes
The Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ) and Freiwilliges Ökologisches Jahr (FÖJ — voluntary ecological year) are important German social programmes. Counter-arguments: Manche Jugendliche haben keine Zeit für Ehrenamt, weil sie für die Schule lernen müssen (Some young people have no time for volunteering because they must study for school). Die Bezahlung ist sehr niedrig (The pay is very low). Es ist schwer, einen Platz zu bekommen (It is hard to get a place).
