Students often use the wrong case after prepositions. Wrong: In meiner Stadt gibt es einen Park (in + dative for location is correct). Correct: In meiner Stadt gibt es einen Park — in takes DATIVE for location. BUT: Ich gehe in die Stadt — in takes ACCUSATIVE for movement towards.
Writing task: Write about pollution, recycling, climate change; environmental vocabulary; man muss/sollte; solutions.
A grade 9 answer will: use at least three tenses accurately; include complex structures (subordinate clauses, modal verbs, separable verbs); show precise grammar (cases, word order, adjective endings); express and justify opinions; include cultural knowledge about DACH countries; use a wide range of vocabulary; be well-organised with connecting words (außerdem, jedoch, trotzdem, zusammenfassend).
Mark scheme: Content (relevance and detail) + Quality of language (accuracy and range) = total marks
AO1 — Knowledge: Show understanding of Environmental Problems and Solutions by demonstrating accurate vocabulary and grammatical structures in the target language.
AO2 — Application: Apply your knowledge of Environmental Problems and Solutions to understand and produce language in listening, reading, speaking and writing contexts.
AO3 — Analysis & Evaluation: Analyse and evaluate linguistic features related to Environmental Problems and Solutions, demonstrating critical awareness of meaning, context and cultural references.
The environment (die Umwelt) is a key GCSE topic. Problem vocabulary: die Umweltverschmutzung (pollution), die Luftverschmutzung (air pollution), die Wasserverschmutzung (water pollution), der Klimawandel (climate change), die globale Erwärmung (global warming), der Müll (rubbish/litter), der Abfall (waste), die Abholzung (deforestation), der Smog (smog), der Verkehr (traffic), der Lärm (noise), das Ozonloch (ozone hole), der Treibhauseffekt (greenhouse effect).
To describe environmental problems, use clear structures: Die Umweltverschmutzung ist ein großes Problem (Pollution is a big problem). Der Klimawandel verursacht extreme Wetterereignisse (Climate change causes extreme weather events). Die Luft in den Städten ist sehr verschmutzt wegen des Verkehrs (The air in cities is very polluted because of traffic). Use wegen + genitive for reasons: wegen des Verkehrs (because of the traffic).
Germany is a leader in environmental awareness. The Energiewende (energy transition) — Germany's shift from nuclear and fossil fuels to renewable energy (die erneuerbaren Energien) — is a globally watched policy. Germany aims to be carbon neutral by 2045. Over 40% of Germany's electricity now comes from renewable sources (Windkraft, Solarenergie, Biomasse, Wasserkraft). In the exam, mentioning the Energiewende demonstrates excellent cultural knowledge.
Die Umweltverschmutzung und der Klimawandel sind große Probleme. In Deutschland gibt es die Energiewende — den Wechsel zu erneuerbaren Energien. Über 40 Prozent des Stroms kommen bereits aus erneuerbaren Quellen.
Pollution and climate change are big problems. In Germany there is the Energiewende — the switch to renewable energy. Over 40% of electricity already comes from renewable sources.
Germany has one of the world's most advanced recycling systems (das Recyclingsystem). The Mülltrennung (waste separation) system requires households to sort waste into several bins: die blaue Tonne (blue bin — paper/cardboard), die gelbe Tonne / der gelbe Sack (yellow bin/bag — packaging/plastics/metals), die braune Tonne / die Biotonne (brown bin — organic/food waste), die schwarze Tonne / die Restmülltonne (black bin — residual waste), and das Altglas (glass recycling — sorted by colour: white, green, brown).
The Pfandsystem (deposit system) is an iconic German environmental initiative. When you buy drinks in plastic bottles or cans, you pay a deposit (das Pfand) of €0.08–0.25. You get this back when you return the empty container to any shop. This system achieves return rates of over 98%. Austria has a similar system. In Switzerland, a Pfandsystem exists for some bottles but is less extensive.
Germany's Elektrogesetz (Electrical Equipment Act) ensures electronic waste is properly recycled. The Verpackungsgesetz (Packaging Act) requires manufacturers to reduce packaging waste. For the exam, describing the German recycling system in detail shows strong cultural knowledge and uses topic-specific vocabulary effectively.
In Deutschland muss man den Müll trennen. Es gibt blaue, gelbe, braune und schwarze Tonnen. Das Pfandsystem für Flaschen ist auch sehr effektiv — fast alle Flaschen werden zurückgebracht.
In Germany one must separate the rubbish. There are blue, yellow, brown and black bins. The deposit system for bottles is also very effective — almost all bottles are returned.
For the exam, discuss what individuals and governments can do for the environment. Individual actions: Ich recycle meinen Müll (I recycle my rubbish), Ich fahre mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule (I cycle to school), Ich verwende Stofftaschen statt Plastiktüten (I use cloth bags instead of plastic bags), Ich spare Energie (I save energy), Ich esse weniger Fleisch (I eat less meat), Ich kaufe Bio-Produkte (I buy organic products).
Government solutions: Man sollte mehr Geld für erneuerbare Energien ausgeben (One should spend more money on renewable energy), Die Regierung sollte den öffentlichen Verkehr verbessern (The government should improve public transport), Man muss die Umweltverschmutzung reduzieren (One must reduce pollution), Es sollte ein Verbot für Einwegplastik geben (There should be a ban on single-use plastic).
Germany banned single-use plastics (Einwegplastikverbot) in 2021. Many German cities have introduced Umweltzonen (low-emission zones) where older cars are banned. The Deutschlandticket (€49/month for all local public transport) encourages people to leave their cars at home. In Austria, the Klimaticket is a similar initiative. Switzerland has one of the highest recycling rates in the world at over 50%.
Ich versuche, umweltfreundlich zu leben. Ich fahre mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule und recycle meinen Müll. Die Regierung sollte mehr für erneuerbare Energien tun.
I try to live in an environmentally friendly way. I cycle to school and recycle my rubbish. The government should do more for renewable energy.
