Detailed Notes

Talking About Hobbies in German

At GCSE level, discussing hobbies requires a range of vocabulary and the ability to express preferences using gern / lieber / am liebsten. Key hobby vocabulary: das Hobby (die Hobbys), die Freizeit (free time), sammeln (to collect), basteln (to do crafts), stricken (to knit), backen (to bake), kochen (to cook), lesen (to read), malen (to paint), Fotografie (photography). Use Ich beschäftige mich gern mit... (I like occupying myself with...) for Higher tier responses.

In Germany, der Verein (club) plays a central role in leisure activities. Over 60% of Germans belong to at least one Verein — whether a sports club (der Sportverein), music club (der Musikverein), gardening club (der Gartenverein) or volunteering organisation (der Förderverein). The concept of Vereinsmeierei (club-mindedness) is a defining feature of German social life, particularly in smaller towns and villages.

To describe what you did last weekend, use the perfect tense: Ich habe am Samstag im Garten gearbeitet (I worked in the garden on Saturday). Ich bin mit Freunden ins Kino gegangen (I went to the cinema with friends). For variety, use different time phrases: letztes Wochenende (last weekend), gestern Abend (yesterday evening), am Sonntag (on Sunday).

Beispiel

In meiner Freizeit lese ich gern Bücher und spiele Gitarre. Am liebsten gehe ich aber wandern. Letztes Wochenende bin ich im Schwarzwald gewandert.
In my free time I like reading books and playing the guitar. But I like going hiking the most. Last weekend I went hiking in the Black Forest.

Outdoor Activities and Nature in DACH Countries

Outdoor activities are hugely popular in German-speaking countries. Key vocabulary: wandern (to hike), Rad fahren (to cycle), klettern (to climb), campen / zelten (to camp), der Wald (forest), die Berge (mountains), der See (lake), die Küste (coast). Germany has over 200,000 km of marked hiking trails, including the famous der Jakobsweg (Way of St James) and der E1 Fernwanderweg.

In Austria, das Wandern (hiking) is almost a national pastime, with the Alpenverein maintaining over 1,000 mountain huts (die Schutzhütten). The Austrian tradition of der Sonntagsausflug (Sunday outing) involves the whole family going for a walk in nature. In Switzerland, hiking is equally popular, with over 65,000 km of marked paths. The Swiss Naturfreundehaus (nature friends' house) network provides affordable mountain accommodation.

Germany also has a strong cycling culture. Cities like Münster and Freiburg are known as Fahrradstädte (cycling cities). The Elberadweg (Elbe cycle path) is one of the most popular cycling routes in Europe. These cultural facts demonstrate excellent intercultural knowledge for the exam.

Beispiel

In Österreich ist Wandern sehr beliebt. Die Schutzhütten des Alpenvereins bieten Übernachtung für Wanderer. In der Schweiz gibt es über 65 000 Kilometer markierte Wanderwege.
In Austria hiking is very popular. The Alpine Club's mountain huts offer accommodation for hikers. In Switzerland there are over 65,000 kilometres of marked hiking paths.

Creative and Cultural Hobbies

For the exam, discussing creative hobbies shows vocabulary range. Key terms: ein Instrument spielen (to play an instrument), Klavier / Geige / Gitarre (piano/violin/guitar), malen / zeichnen (to paint/draw), schreiben (to write), die Handarbeit (handicraft), der Chor (choir), die Theatergruppe (drama group). Germany has a rich musical tradition — composers like Bach, Beethoven and Brahms are household names.

To describe how long you have been doing a hobby, use seit + dative: Ich spiele seit drei Jahren Klavier (I have been playing the piano for three years). Note that seit is used with the present tense in German, unlike English which uses the present perfect. This is a common exam error: Ich spiele seit fünf Jahren Gitarre (NOT: Ich habe seit fünf Jahren gespielt).

The German tradition of die Musizieren im Haus (making music at home) was historically very important. Today, many German children learn an instrument through der Musikverein or private lessons. In Austria, the Musikschulwerk (music school system) provides affordable music education. Switzerland has a similar Musikschule tradition.

Beispiel

Ich spiele seit vier Jahren Geige im Schulorchester. Wir proben jeden Mittwoch. Nächstes Monat werden wir ein Konzert geben. Ich spiele auch gern Klavier zu Hause.
I have been playing the violin in the school orchestra for four years. We rehearse every Wednesday. Next month we will give a concert. I also like playing the piano at home.
