A grade 9 answer will: use at least three tenses accurately; include complex structures (subordinate clauses, modal verbs, separable verbs); show precise grammar (cases, word order, adjective endings); express and justify opinions; include cultural knowledge about DACH countries; use a wide range of vocabulary; be well-organised with connecting words (außerdem, jedoch, trotzdem, zusammenfassend).

Technology is a core GCSE topic requiring specific vocabulary. Key terms: das Handy (mobile phone), der Computer (computer), der Laptop (laptop), das Tablet (tablet), das Internet (the internet), die App (app), der USB-Stick (USB stick), der Drucker (printer), der Bildschirm (screen), die Tastatur (keyboard), das Passwort (password), der Akku (battery). Common verbs: downloaden (to download), speichern (to save), löschen (to delete), anschalten/ausschalten (to turn on/off — separable verbs).
German has adopted many English technology words (Denglisch): chatten, surfen, posten, liken, downloaden, streamen. However, some terms are genuinely German: das Fernseher (television), die Fernbedienung (remote control), der Router (router), der Netzstecker (plug). When German verbs are borrowed from English, they follow German conjugation patterns: ich chatte, du chattest, er chattet.
Germany is Europe's largest technology market. Companies like SAP, Siemens and Deutsche Telekom are global leaders. In Austria, the start-up scene in Vienna is growing rapidly, especially in fintech. Switzerland, particularly Zurich, is a major hub for tech companies, with Google's largest office outside the US located there.
Ich benutze jeden Tag mein Handy. Ich chatte mit Freunden, surfe im Internet und schaue Videos. Ich habe auch eine Smartwatch, die meine Schritte zählt.
I use my mobile phone every day. I chat with friends, surf the internet and watch videos. I also have a smartwatch that counts my steps.
In the exam, you should be able to discuss the pros and cons of technology. Advantages: Das Internet ist praktisch (The internet is practical), Man kann schnell Informationen finden (One can find information quickly), Man kann mit Freunden in Kontakt bleiben (One can stay in contact with friends), Online-Shopping ist bequem (Online shopping is convenient).
Disadvantages: Man verbringt zu viel Zeit vor dem Bildschirm (One spends too much time in front of the screen), Social Media kann süchtig machen (Social media can be addictive), Es gibt Cybermobbing (There is cyberbullying), Es ist gefährlich, persönliche Daten zu teilen (It is dangerous to share personal data). Use einerseits ... andererseits (on the one hand... on the other hand) to structure your argument: Einerseits ist das Internet nützlich, andererseits kann es gefährlich sein.
Germany has strong data protection laws (der Datenschutz), influenced by its history. The Bundesdatenschutzgesetz (Federal Data Protection Act) predates the EU's GDPR. Germans are generally more cautious about sharing personal data online than British people. In the exam, mentioning der Datenschutz shows excellent cultural awareness.
Einerseits ist das Internet sehr nützlich — man kann schnell Informationen finden und mit Freunden chatten. Andererseits verbringen viele Jugendliche zu viel Zeit vor dem Bildschirm. Ich finde, man sollte die Nutzungszeit begrenzen.
On the one hand the internet is very useful — one can find information quickly and chat with friends. On the other hand many young people spend too much time in front of the screen. I think one should limit the usage time.
The use of technology in German schools varies widely. Some schools have introduced digitale Tafeln (interactive whiteboards) and iPads im Unterricht, while others have limited resources. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the digital gap (die digitale Kluft) in German education — many schools struggled with der Fernunterricht (remote learning) due to poor infrastructure.
There is an ongoing debate in Germany about whether mobile phones should be allowed in schools. Some schools have introduced Handyverbote (phone bans), while others allow phones for educational purposes. The term Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is increasingly used in German schools. In Austria, the eEducation initiative promotes digital literacy. Switzerland has invested heavily in digital infrastructure for schools.
For the exam, discuss both sides of the technology debate using complex structures. Obwohl Handys im Unterricht nützlich sein können, finde ich, dass sie oft ablenken (Although mobile phones can be useful in lessons, I think they are often distracting). Use obwohl (although) as a subordinating conjunction — it sends the verb to the end of the clause.
An meiner Schule dürfen wir Handys in den Pausen benutzen, aber nicht im Unterricht. Ich finde das fair. Obwohl Smartphones nützlich sein können, lenken sie oft vom Lernen ab.
At my school we may use mobile phones during breaks but not in lessons. I think that is fair. Although smartphones can be useful, they often distract from learning.
