In Germany, going to the cinema often means watching dubbed films (die Synchronisation). Unlike in the UK, most foreign films in Germany are dubbed into German rather than shown with subtitles. However, some cinemas show films in the original version (OV — Originalversion or OmU — Original mit Untertiteln). This is a notable cultural difference to mention in the exam.
German theatre culture is rich and accessible. Many cities have a Stadttheater (municipal theatre) that offers subsidised tickets for young people. The Theatergemeinde (theatre community) tradition means theatre is seen as cultural education, not just entertainment. In Austria, the Burgtheater in Vienna is one of the most prestigious theatres in the German-speaking world. In Switzerland, the Schauspielhaus in Zurich is similarly renowned.
Am Wochenende gehe ich oft mit Freunden ins Kino. In Deutschland werden die meisten Filme synchronisiert. Letzte Woche habe ich einen deutschen Film gesehen — er war sehr lustig.

In Germany, the Jugendschutzgesetz (Youth Protection Act) governs when young people can go out. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult after 10 PM; 16–17 year olds can stay out until midnight without an adult. These laws are enforced at the door of clubs and bars, where you must show your Personalausweis (ID card). In the UK, by contrast, there is no equivalent curfew law.
German nightlife is world-famous, especially in Berlin, which is known for its Clubkultur (club culture). Clubs like Berghain are iconic. However, for GCSE purposes, you should focus on age-appropriate activities like der Jugendclub, die Hausparty and das Open-Air-Konzert. In Austria, the Würstelstand (sausage stand) is a cultural institution where young people meet after a night out. In Switzerland, the Street Parade in Zurich is Europe's largest techno parade.

The Oktoberfest in Munich is the world's largest folk festival, attracting over 6 million visitors. However, every German town and city has its own Stadtfest (town festival) or Volksfest. In Austria, the Wiener Opernball (Vienna Opera Ball) is a glamorous annual event. Switzerland's Street Parade in Zurich and das Locarno Festival (film festival) are internationally known.
For the exam, describe a festival you have attended using the perfect tense: Ich bin letztes Jahr zum Oktoberfest gegangen (I went to the Oktoberfest last year).
