Students often confuse gern/lieber/am liebsten. Wrong: Ich spiele gern Fußball = I like playing football. Ich spiele lieber Fußball = I prefer football. Ich spiele am liebsten Fußball = I like playing football the most. Correct: gern = gladly/like; lieber = prefer; am liebsten = most preferably. They go AFTER the verb, not before.

At GCSE level, you need a broad range of food vocabulary. Key food categories include: das Obst (fruit), das Gemüse (vegetables), das Fleisch (meat), der Fisch (fish), die Milchprodukte (dairy products), die Kohlenhydrate (carbohydrates), das Eiweiß (protein). For a balanced diet, use the phrase ausgewogene Ernährung (balanced diet). The verb essen (to eat) is irregular: ich esse, du isst, er/sie isst, wir essen, ihr esst, sie essen.
Typical German meals include das Frühstück (breakfast — often rolls with cheese or cold meats), das Mittagessen (lunch — the main hot meal), and das Abendbrot (evening meal — literally "evening bread", a cold meal with bread, cheese and Aufschnitt). In Austria, der Mehlspeis (pastry) culture means cakes like Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel are important. In Switzerland, Käse (cheese) is central to the cuisine, especially Fondue and Raclette.
When discussing healthy eating in the exam, use man sollte (one should) and man sollte nicht (one should not) for giving advice: Man sollte viel Obst und Gemüse essen (One should eat lots of fruit and vegetables). Use zu viel (too much) and zu wenig (too little) to describe unhealthy habits: Ich esse zu viel Schokolade (I eat too much chocolate).
Ich versuche, gesund zu essen. Zum Frühstück esse ich Müsli mit frischem Obst. Zum Mittagessen gibt es oft Salat und Gemüse. Aber am Wochenende esse ich gerne Pizza.
I try to eat healthily. For breakfast I eat muesli with fresh fruit. For lunch there is often salad and vegetables. But at the weekend I like to eat pizza.
German-speaking countries have rich food traditions that are excellent for cultural knowledge marks. In Germany, das Brot (bread) is a cultural institution — there are over 3,000 types of bread. The Bäckerei (bakery) is an essential part of every neighbourhood. On Sundays, many families still enjoy a traditional Sonntagsbraten (Sunday roast).
In Austria, the Kaffeehaus (coffee house) tradition in Vienna is recognised by UNESCO. Austrians take their coffee culture seriously — a typical order might be ein Melange (similar to a cappuccino). Each Austrian region has specialities: Wiener Schnitzel from Vienna, Käseknödel (cheese dumplings) from Tyrol, and Steiermark-Kürbiskernöl (Styrian pumpkin seed oil).
Swiss cuisine is heavily influenced by its neighbours but has distinctive traditions. das Zürcher Geschnetzelte (Zurich-style veal) and Rösti (grated potato fritter) are iconic. The Swiss eat the most chocolate per capita in the world. Understanding these regional differences demonstrates cultural awareness for the exam.
In Deutschland gibt es über 3000 Brotsorten. Am Sonntag essen viele Familien traditionell einen Sonntagsbraten. In Österreich ist die Kaffeehauskultur sehr wichtig.
In Germany there are over 3,000 types of bread. On Sundays many families traditionally eat a Sunday roast. In Austria the coffee house culture is very important.
Modern dietary preferences are important vocabulary for GCSE German. Key terms include: vegetarisch (vegetarian), vegan (vegan), die Allergie (allergy), laktoseintolerant (lactose intolerant), glutenfrei (gluten-free). Germany has one of the highest rates of vegetarianism in Europe — approximately 10% of Germans are vegetarian (Vegetarier) and about 1.5% are vegan (Veganer).
To discuss dietary choices, use phrases like: Ich bin Vegetarier, weil ich Tiere nicht essen möchte (I am vegetarian because I do not want to eat animals). Ich verzichte auf Fleisch (I go without meat). Ich habe eine Allergie gegen Nüsse (I have an allergy to nuts). The verb verzichten auf (to go without / give up) is useful for Higher tier responses.
The Biologie (organic) food movement is particularly strong in Germany. Bioläden (organic shops) and Wochenmärkte (weekly markets) are popular. The Demeter and Bio-Siegel (organic seal) labels guarantee organic standards. In Switzerland, die Bio-Kurve is the proportion of organic products sold, which is the highest in Europe.
Ich bin seit einem Jahr Vegetarierin. Ich verzichte auf Fleisch, weil ich Tiere liebe. In Deutschland gibt es viele vegetarische Restaurants und Bioläden.
