⚠️ Common Errors

Watch Out!

Students often confuse gern/lieber/am liebsten. Wrong: Ich spiele gern Fußball = I like playing football. Ich spiele lieber Fußball = I prefer football. Ich spiele am liebsten Fußball = I like playing football the most. Correct: gern = gladly/like; lieber = prefer; am liebsten = most preferably. They go AFTER the verb, not before.

Detailed Notes

Sports Vocabulary and Preferences

At GCSE level, you need to discuss sports and exercise using gern / lieber / am liebsten to express preferences. Ich spiele gern Fußball (I like playing football), Ich spiele lieber Tennis (I prefer playing tennis), Ich spiele am liebsten Basketball (I like playing basketball the most). These adverbs go after the verb, not before it — a common exam error.

Key sports vocabulary includes: der Fußball (football), das Schwimmen (swimming), das Joggen (jogging), das Turnen (gymnastics), der Verein (club), die Mannschaft (team), das Training (training), der Sportplatz (sports field), das Stadion (stadium). Note that some sports use spielen (ball sports) and others use machen or tun: Ich spiele Fußball but Ich mache Gymnastik.

Football (der Fußball) is by far the most popular sport in Germany. The Bundesliga is one of the top European leagues, and Germany won the World Cup in 2014. In Austria, skiing (das Skifahren) is the national sport — Austria has produced many Olympic skiing champions. In Switzerland, das Schwingen (Swiss wrestling) and das Hornussen (a traditional bat-and-ball sport) are unique national sports.

Beispiel

Ich spiele gern Fußball im Verein. Ich trainiere dreimal pro Woche. Am liebsten spiele ich als Stürmer. Letztes Jahr haben wir die Meisterschaft gewonnen.
I like playing football in a club. I train three times a week. I like playing as a striker the most. Last year we won the championship.

The Benefits of Sport and Exercise

In the exam, you should be able to explain the benefits of sport. Use weil (because) to give reasons: Ich treibe Sport, weil es gesund ist (I do sport because it is healthy). Key benefits include: Es hält fit (It keeps you fit), Es macht Spaß (It is fun), Es ist gut für das Herz (It is good for the heart), Es hilft beim Abnehmen (It helps with losing weight), Es reduziert Stress (It reduces stress).

To discuss disadvantages or reasons for not doing sport, use phrases like: Ich habe keine Zeit (I have no time), Ich bin zu müde (I am too tired), Es ist zu teuer (It is too expensive), Ich bin nicht sportlich (I am not sporty). The modal verb können is useful here: Ich kann nicht schwimmen (I cannot swim).

Germany has a strong tradition of der Sportverein (sports club) — there are over 90,000 sports clubs with around 27 million members. The concept of Vereinsleben (club life) is central to German social culture. In Austria, the Alpenverein (Alpine club) is one of the largest organisations, reflecting the importance of hiking and mountaineering in Austrian culture.

Beispiel

Sport ist sehr wichtig für die Gesundheit. Ich jogge jeden Morgen, weil es mich fit macht und Stress reduziert. Außerdem treffe ich meine Freunde beim Training.
Sport is very important for health. I jog every morning because it keeps me fit and reduces stress. Moreover, I meet my friends at training.

Using Modal Verbs with Sport

Modal verbs are essential when discussing sport and exercise. The six modal verbs are: können (can), müssen (must), dürfen (may/be allowed to), sollen (should), wollen (want to), möchten (would like to). In a main clause, the modal verb is conjugated in second position and the infinitive goes to the end: Ich muss jeden Tag trainieren (I must train every day).

Common examples with sport: Ich kann sehr gut schwimmen (I can swim very well), Ich muss mehr Sport treiben (I must do more sport), Ich darf nicht zu viel essen (I must not eat too much), Man soll jeden Tag dreißig Minuten Sport machen (One should do thirty minutes of sport every day).

For Higher tier, combine modal verbs with perfect tense: Ich habe nicht schwimmen können (I could not swim). In subordinate clauses, the double infinitive goes to the end: Weil ich habe trainieren müssen (Because I had to train). This construction is required for top marks in writing.

Beispiel

Ich möchte nächstes Jahr einen Marathon laufen. Dafür muss ich jeden Tag trainieren. Ich kann schon zehn Kilometer joggen, aber ich soll noch mehr üben.
I would like to run a marathon next year. For that I must train every day. I can already jog ten kilometres, but I should practise even more.
