Students often confuse gern/lieber/am liebsten. Wrong: Ich spiele gern Fußball = I like playing football. Ich spiele lieber Fußball = I prefer football. Ich spiele am liebsten Fußball = I like playing football the most. Correct: gern = gladly/like; lieber = prefer; am liebsten = most preferably. They go AFTER the verb, not before.
Writing task: Write about dangers of smoking, drugs and alcohol; opinions; man soll/man darf nicht; healthy choices.

To discuss smoking at GCSE level, you need key vocabulary: rauchen (to smoke), der Raucher / die Raucherin (smoker), das Rauchen (smoking), die Zigarette (cigarette), das Rauchverbot (smoking ban), passiv rauchen (to passive-smoke), die Sucht (addiction), nikotinabhängig (nicotine-dependent). To express opinions: Ich finde Rauchen ungesund (I find smoking unhealthy).
Germany introduced a smoking ban in public buildings and restaurants in 2007–2008, but the laws vary by Bundesland (federal state). In Bavaria, the ban is strict; in Berlin, there are exceptions for small bars. Austria introduced a general smoking ban in restaurants in 2019 after much debate. Switzerland has no nationwide ban — it is decided by canton. These differences make excellent cultural comparison material for the exam.
Use man darf nicht (one must not / is not allowed to) to discuss regulations: Man darf nicht in öffentlichen Gebäuden rauchen (One must not smoke in public buildings). Use man sollte nicht (one should not) for advice: Man sollte nicht rauchen, weil es Krebs verursachen kann (One should not smoke because it can cause cancer).
In Deutschland darf man nicht in Restaurants rauchen. Ich finde das gut, weil Passivrauchen auch gefährlich ist. Man sollte das Rauchen ganz verbieten.
In Germany you are not allowed to smoke in restaurants. I think that is good because passive smoking is also dangerous. One should ban smoking completely.
Alcohol is an important exam topic with strong cultural relevance. Key vocabulary: das Bier (beer), der Wein (wine), der Alkohol (alcohol), alkoholisch / alkoholfrei (alcoholic / non-alcoholic), betrinken (to get drunk), der Alkoholmissbrauch (alcohol abuse), die Alkoholabhängigkeit (alcohol dependency). The legal drinking age in Germany is 16 for beer and wine, and 18 for spirits — lower than the UK.
German drinking culture is distinctive. das Bier is a significant part of German culture — Germany has over 1,500 breweries and the Reinheitsgebot (Beer Purity Law) of 1516 is the oldest food safety regulation in the world. At das Oktoberfest in Munich, over 7 million litres of beer are consumed each year. In Austria, the Heurigen (wine taverns) in the Wachau region are a beloved tradition. Switzerland has a growing wine culture, especially in the Valais and Vaud cantons.
When discussing alcohol in the exam, balance cultural knowledge with health awareness. Use phrases like: In Deutschland darf man mit sechzehn Jahren Bier trinken (In Germany you may drink beer at 16). Aber Alkoholmissbrauch ist ein großes Problem (But alcohol abuse is a big problem). Ich trinke keinen Alkohol, weil ich noch zu jung bin (I do not drink alcohol because I am still too young).
In Deutschland darf man ab 16 Jahren Bier und Wein trinken. Das Reinheitsgebot von 1516 ist das älteste Lebensmittelgesetz der Welt. Aber Alkoholmissbrauch ist auch ein Problem.
In Germany you may drink beer and wine from the age of 16. The Beer Purity Law of 1516 is the oldest food law in the world. But alcohol abuse is also a problem.
The topic of drugs (die Drogen) appears in both AQA and Edexcel GCSE German specifications. Key vocabulary includes: weiche Drogen (soft drugs), harte Drogen (hard drugs), Cannabis (cannabis), der Konsum (consumption), abhängig sein von (to be dependent on), der Gruppenzwang (peer pressure), Nein sagen (to say no).
Germany partially legalised cannabis in 2024 for personal use, making it a current and relevant topic. In Austria, cannabis remains illegal but is decriminalised in small amounts. Switzerland has pilot programmes for regulated cannabis sales. Understanding these legal differences shows excellent cultural knowledge for the exam.
To discuss peer pressure, use phrases like: Viele Jugendliche probieren Drogen wegen des Gruppenzwangs (Many young people try drugs because of peer pressure). Es ist wichtig, Nein sagen zu können (It is important to be able to say no). Man sollte sich nicht von anderen beeinflussen lassen (One should not let oneself be influenced by others). The passive construction sich lassen + infinitive is a Higher tier structure.
Viele Jugendliche probieren Drogen wegen des Gruppenzwangs. Ich finde, man sollte Nein sagen können. In Deutschland ist Cannabis jetzt teilweise legalisiert, aber es ist trotzdem gefährlich.
Many young people try drugs because of peer pressure. I think one should be able to say no. In Germany cannabis is now partially legalised, but it is still dangerous.
