📅 What is a Training Year?

Definition: A training year (macrocycle) is divided into distinct phases, each with specific training goals. The training programme is structured so the athlete peaks (reaches their best performance) at the right time - usually for the most important competitions.

This is called periodisation - the systematic planning of training to reach the best possible performance at a particular time.

The training year is divided into three main phases:

  1. Pre-season (preparation)
  2. Competition/peak season (competition)
  3. Post-season/transition (recovery)

Goal: Build a base of fitness and develop the specific skills needed for the upcoming competitive season. The aim is to prepare the body and mind for the demands of competition.

A professional footballer's pre-season (July-August) typically involves: daily training sessions; long-distance running to build cardiovascular endurance (aerobic base); weight training for strength and power; sprint training and agility drills; practice matches to apply skills; gradually increasing intensity as the season approaches. Players return from the off-season break and must rebuild fitness before the first competitive match.

Goal: Maintain the fitness built in pre-season while performing at the highest possible level in competitions. Training shifts from building fitness to maintaining it and peaking for key events.

Tapering: A planned reduction in training volume (by 40-60%) in the 7-14 days before a major competition. Intensity may remain high but the total training load is reduced. This allows the body to fully recover, replenish energy stores and repair any remaining muscle damage, so the athlete is at peak physical and mental condition for competition.
Competition Season in Athletics

An 800m runner during the summer competition season: competes in races every 1-2 weeks; between races, does short, high-quality interval sessions (e.g. 6 × 200m at race pace) to maintain speed and anaerobic fitness; reduces overall training volume to stay fresh for races; tapers in the week before a major championship (e.g. reduces training by 50% in the final 5 days); focuses on race tactics and mental preparation.

Goal: Allow the body and mind to recover from the demands of the competitive season. Prevent burnout, repair injuries and recharge for the next pre-season. This is NOT a period of complete inactivity.

After a long rugby season (September-May), a player enters the transition phase (June-July). For the first 2-3 weeks, they rest completely from rugby and do only light, enjoyable activity (swimming, cycling, walking). Any injuries are assessed and treated. Over the remaining weeks, they gradually increase activity levels with gym work and light running, preparing the body for the demanding pre-season that begins in late July. Mental recovery is equally important - time away from the sport's pressures refreshes motivation.

🔄 Periodisation Structure

Periodisation terminology:
Macrocycle = the overall training year (e.g. 12 months)
Mesocycle = a block within the macrocycle (e.g. 4-6 weeks, such as pre-season phase)
Microcycle = a single training week within a mesocycle
