Present tense, preterite tense, imperfect tense, regular and irregular verbs, when to use each tense
For Tenses: Present, Preterite and Imperfect, you must know:
Q1: Write 4 sentences in Spanish about tenses: present, preterite and imperfect.
Q2: Write a paragraph (40-60 words) giving your opinion on tenses: present, preterite and imperfect.
Q3: Translate into Spanish: "I think tenses: present, preterite and imperfect is important because..."
✗ Forgetting adjective agreement — writing "ella es inteligent" instead of "ella es inteligente" ✓ All Spanish adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe: inteligente works for both, but many add -a for feminine (alto/alta, bueno/buena).
✗ Using the wrong tense — preterite for descriptions instead of imperfect ✓ Use the imperfect for ongoing past actions, descriptions and habits (era, tenía, hacía). Use the preterite for completed single events (fue, tuvo, hizo).
✗ Confusing ser and estar — both mean "to be" but are used differently ✓ Ser is for permanent characteristics, identity, time (es grande, es español). Estar is for temporary states, location, progress (está cansado, está en Madrid).
✗ Translating directly from English word order — putting adjectives before nouns ✓ Most Spanish adjectives follow the noun: "la casa blanca" (not "la blanca casa"). Some change meaning depending on position (un gran hombre vs un hombre grande).
Writing task: Write about present tense, preterite tense, imperfect tense, regular and irregular verbs, when to use each tense.

Every day I get up at seven, have toast with tomato for breakfast and go to school by bus. In the evening, I do my homework and watch television.
Last summer I went to Granada with my family. I visited the Alhambra and had tapas in the Albaicín neighbourhood. It was very hot but I had a great time.
When I was little, I went to the beach every summer. It was very hot and my grandparents prepared paella on Sundays. It was a happy time.

Después, cocinamos una paella para toda la familia. Por la tarde, vi una película española en Netflix y me gustó mucho. Last weekend I did many things. On Saturday morning, I went to the market with my mother and we bought fresh fruits and vegetables. Then, we cooked a paella for the whole family. In the afternoon, I watched a Spanish film on Netflix and I really liked it. On Sunday, I got up late and had churros with chocolate for breakfast in a café in the centre. Then, I took a walk in the park with my friends. It was a great and relaxing weekend.
Q: Describe cómo era tu vida cuando eras pequeño/a. Usa el imperfecto para describir rutinas y situaciones del pasado. (Write approx. 80-100 words in Spanish.)
Model Answer: Cuando era pequeña, mi vida era muy diferente. Vivía en un pueblo pequeño en la costa. Todos los días iba al colegio andando con mis amigos. Hacía mucho sol y jugábamos en la playa después de clase. Los fines de semana, mi abuela preparaba tortilla española y comíamos todos juntos. Por la noche, veía los dibujos animados en la televisión. No tenía móvil ni internet, así que jugaba al escondite con mis hermanos. Era una época muy feliz y sencilla. Me encantaría volver a aquellos días.
When I was little, my life was very different. I lived in a small village on the coast. Every day I walked to school with my friends. It was very sunny and we played on the beach after class. At weekends, my grandmother prepared Spanish omelette and we all ate together. At night, I watched cartoons on television. I didn't have a mobile phone or internet, so I played hide-and-seek with my siblings. It was a very happy and simple time. I would love to go back to those days.
