🎯 Exam Tips

📝 Exam Technique

GCSE Spanish Exam Tips:
Spanish questions use inverted question marks (¿...?). Question words (qué, quién, cuándo, dónde, cómo, por qué, cuánto). Modal verbs: poder (can), deber (must/should), querer (want), saber (know how to). Use modal + infinitive structure.

⚠️ Common Errors

✗ Forgetting adjective agreement — writing "ella es inteligent" instead of "ella es inteligente" ✓ All Spanish adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe: inteligente works for both, but many add -a for feminine (alto/alta, bueno/buena).

✗ Using the wrong tense — preterite for descriptions instead of imperfect ✓ Use the imperfect for ongoing past actions, descriptions and habits (era, tenía, hacía). Use the preterite for completed single events (fue, tuvo, hizo).

✗ Confusing ser and estar — both mean "to be" but are used differently ✓ Ser is for permanent characteristics, identity, time (es grande, es español). Estar is for temporary states, location, progress (está cansado, está en Madrid).

✗ Translating directly from English word order — putting adjectives before nouns ✓ Most Spanish adjectives follow the noun: "la casa blanca" (not "la blanca casa"). Some change meaning depending on position (un gran hombre vs un hombre grande).

Notas Detalladas

To write a good text in the exam, it is essential to plan before writing. Include at least three tenses, use the subjuntivo and varied connectors like 'además' and 'sin embargo'.

La Traducción: Técnicas y Estrategias

La traducción es una parte importante del examen GCSE. Para traducir del inglés al español, no traduzcas palabra por palabra. En cambio, entiende el significado completo de la frase y luego exprésalo en español de forma natural. Por ejemplo, 'I am looking forward to' no se traduce como 'estoy mirando hacia adelante a', sino como 'tengo muchas ganas de' o 'me hace mucha ilusión'.

Las estructuras que no tienen traducción literal son las más difíciles. 'There is/are' = 'hay'; 'it has been' = 'ha habido' o 'ha sido'; 'I have been studying' = 'llevo estudiando'; 'it is said that' = 'se dice que'; 'I was told' = 'me dijeron'. Aprende estas equivalencias porque aparecen frecuentemente en los exámenes. Otro error común es traducir 'to be' como 'ser' cuando debería ser 'estar': 'I am happy' = 'estoy contento' (no 'soy contento').

Para la traducción del español al inglés, presta atención a las estructuras que no existen en inglés: la doble negación ('no vi nada' = 'I didn't see anything', no 'I didn't see nothing'), el subjuntivo ('es importante que estudies' = 'it is important that you study') y las perífrasis verbales ('acabo de llegar' = 'I have just arrived', 'llevo dos horas esperando' = 'I have been waiting for two hours').

Ejemplo

La frase 'I am looking forward to the holidays' no se traduce literalmente. La traducción correcta es 'Tengo muchas ganas de las vacaciones' o 'Me hace mucha ilusión las vacaciones'.
The phrase 'I am looking forward to the holidays' is not translated literally. The correct translation is 'I really look forward to the holidays' or 'The holidays excite me a lot'.

3) ¿He usado ser/estar correctamente? 4) ¿He usado por/para correctamente? 5) ¿Hay concordancia de género y número? 6) ¿He usado el subjuntivo cuando es necesario? 7) ¿He incluido conectores variados? Revisar tu trabajo con esta lista te ayudará a minimizar errores.

Ejemplo

Cuidado con la diferencia entre 'soy aburrido' (I am boring) y 'estoy aburrido' (I am bored). Un error así puede cambiar completamente el significado de tu frase.
Be careful with the difference between 'soy aburrido' (I am boring) and 'estoy aburrido' (I am bored). A mistake like this can completely change the meaning of your sentence.

Preguntas de Práctica Adicionales

Q: Escribe un texto sobre la importancia de aprender idiomas extranjeros. Incluye al menos tres tiempos verbales, el subjuntivo y conectores variados. (Write approx. 120-150 words in Spanish.)
