🎯 Exam Tips

📝 Exam Technique

French Exam Tips — Prepositions and Conjunctions:
1. For Prepositions and Conjunctions, use a range of vocabulary and complex grammatical structures to access higher marks
2. Check verb tenses, agreements and word order carefully in your written work
3. In translation tasks, translate meaning rather than word-for-word
4. When writing about Prepositions and Conjunctions, include opinions and justifications, not just descriptions
5. For listening and reading, focus on key words and cognates to extract meaning

⚠️ Common Errors

Watch Out!

Students often forget to make adjectives agree. Wrong: Les filles sont petit. Correct: Les filles sont petites (feminine plural — add -es). Students also confuse the imperfect and perfect tenses. Wrong: Quand j'étais jeune, j'ai habité à Paris (perfect = single event). Correct: Quand j'étais jeune, j'habitais à Paris (imperfect = ongoing/habitual past).

✍️ Model Answer

Full-Mark Response

Writing task: Write about key prepositions (à, de, en, dans); conjunctions (mais, parce que, cependant, donc); connecting ideas.

A grade 9 answer will: use at least three tenses accurately; include complex structures (subordinate clauses, pronouns, negation); show precise grammar (agreement, conjugation, spelling); express and justify opinions; include cultural knowledge; use a wide range of vocabulary; be well-organised with connecting words (cependant, en revanche, de plus, en conclusion).

Mark scheme: Content (relevance and detail) + Quality of language (accuracy and range) = total marks

Les Prépositions de Lieu et de Temps

Prepositions of place: à (at/to — cities: à Paris, à Lyon), en (in — feminine countries: en France, en Belgique), au (in — masculine countries: au Sénégal, au Québec — Québec uses au despite being a province), aux (in — plural countries: aux États-Unis), dans (in — enclosed spaces: dans la chambre). The distinction between à, en, au and dans is a key GCSE test point.

Prepositions of time: à (at specific times: à huit heures), en (in months/seasons/years: en juillet, en été, en 2024), au (with masculine season: au printemps — exception!), le (on specific days: le lundi, le 14 juillet — French uses le where English uses "on"), pendant (during: pendant les vacances), depuis (since/for: depuis trois ans — used with present tense in French where English uses the perfect).

The depuis/pendant/pour distinction: depuis = since/for (action still continuing, use present tense: J'apprends le français depuis cinq ans = I have been learning French for five years). Pendant = during (specific duration: J'ai étudié pendant deux heures). Pour = for (intended duration: Je pars pour une semaine).

Exemple

J'habite en France depuis trois ans. L'été dernier, je suis allé au Sénégal pendant deux semaines. Je vais au Québec pour un mois l'année prochaine. — I have lived in France for three years. Last summer, I went to Sénégal for two weeks. I am going to Québec for a month next year.

Les Conjonctions: Connecter vos Idées

Basic conjunctions: et (and), mais (but), ou (or), donc (so/therefore), parce que/car (because), quand/lorsque (when). For Higher tier, use more sophisticated connectors: cependant/toutefois (however), en revanche (on the other hand), tandis que/alors que (whereas), de plus/en plus (moreover/furthermore), par conséquent (consequently), d'une part... d'autre part (on one hand... on the other hand).

Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent clauses: que (that — triggers subjunctive in some cases), si (if), quand/lorsque (when), pendant que (while), avant que (before — triggers subjunctive), après que (after — technically takes indicative, though many French speakers use subjunctive), pour que (so that — triggers subjunctive). Using these structures demonstrates Higher tier capability.

For GCSE writing, use connectors to structure responses: introduction (tout d'abord, pour commencer), adding points (de plus, en outre, également), contrasting (cependant, en revanche, tandis que), giving reasons (parce que, car, en effet), concluding (en conclusion, pour finir, en résumé). A well-structured response with varied connectors scores much higher than one with just et and mais.

Exemple

D'une part, la France est célèbre pour sa gastronomie. D'autre part, la malbouffe devient plus populaire, surtout chez les jeunes. Cependant, le gouvernement essaie de promouvoir le Nutri-Score. En conclusion, il faut équilibrer tradition et modernité. — On one hand, France is famous for its gastronomy. On the other hand, junk food is becoming more popular, especially among young people. However, the government is trying to promote the Nutri-Score. In conclusion, we must balance tradition and modernity.

Prépositions et Conjonctions en Contexte

Prepositions and conjunctions are essential for discussing francophone culture accurately. En France, on célèbre le 14 juillet, tandis qu'au Québec, c'est la Fête nationale le 24 juin. Au Sénégal, pendant le Magal de Touba, des millions de personnes se rendent à Touba. En Belgique, le Carnaval de Binche a lieu avant le Carême.

Using depuis with the present tense is a key difference from English: Le français est la langue officielle du Sénégal depuis 1960 (French has been the official language of Sénégal since 1960 — present tense in French, perfect tense in English). La Tour Eiffel existe depuis 1889 (The Eiffel Tower has existed since 1889).

For top marks, combine prepositions and conjunctions with cultural content: Depuis que je suis allé en Provence, j'adore la lavande. Pendant mon séjour à Dakar, j'ai appris l'importance de la teranga. Avant de visiter le Vieux-Québec, je ne connaissais pas la culture québécoise. Après avoir goûté la poutine, j'en suis devenu fan.

Exemple

Depuis 2010, le repas gastronomique français est classé par l'UNESCO. Pendant la Fête de la Musique, il y a des concerts partout en France. Après avoir visité le Sénégal, j'ai compris l'importance de la teranga. — Since 2010, the French gastronomic meal has been classified by UNESCO. During the Fête de la Musique, there are concerts everywhere in France. After visiting Sénégal, I understood the importance of teranga.

Questions Supplémentaires

Q4: Complétez avec la bonne préposition: Je vais ___ France ___ juillet. J'habite ___ Lyon ___ 2019. J'étudie le français ___ trois ans. (Complete with the correct preposition.)

Q5: Reliez ces phrases en utilisant des conjonctions variées: La France est célèbre pour sa gastronomie. La malbouffe est populaire chez les jeunes. Le gouvernement promeut le Nutri-Score. (Link these sentences using varied conjunctions.)

Réponses Supplémentaires

  1. Je vais en France en juillet. J'habite à Lyon depuis 2019. J'étudie le français depuis trois ans. Explication: « en » pour les pays féminins et les mois, « à » pour les villes, « depuis » pour une action qui continue dans le présent. Si on dit « J'ai habité à Lyon pendant trois ans », on utilise « pendant » parce que l'action est terminée. La différence entre « depuis » et « pendant » est cruciale: « depuis » = action continue (temps présent), « pendant » = durée spécifique (passé ou futur). — I am going to France in July. I have lived in Lyon since 2019. I have been studying French for three years. Explanation: « en » for feminine countries and months, « à » for cities, « depuis » for an action continuing into the present. If you say « I lived in Lyon for three years », you use « pendant » because the action is finished. The difference between « depuis » and « pendant » is crucial.
  2. D'une part, la France est célèbre pour sa gastronomie et ses traditions culinaires. D'autre part, la malbouffe est de plus en plus populaire chez les jeunes. Cependant, le gouvernement promeut le Nutri-Score pour aider les consommateurs à faire des choix sains. En conclusion, il faut équilibrer les traditions gastronomiques avec une alimentation saine. En plus, les écoles doivent enseigner la nutrition. — On one hand, France is famous for its gastronomy and culinary traditions. On the other hand, junk food is becoming increasingly popular among young people. However, the government promotes the Nutri-Score to help consumers make healthy choices. In conclusion, we must balance gastronomic traditions with a healthy diet. In addition, schools should teach nutrition.
